Indang town preps up for 362nd foundation day fest
« on: May 25, 2020, 01:10:27 PM »
INDANG, Cavite -- Cavite’s upland town of Indang, which figured in history as the site where Magdiwang faction leader Andres Bonifacio was arrested and barred from establishing his own government and army, will celebrate its 22nd "Indang Day" festivities with street dancing, job and agri-fair, and grand parade from Nov 27 to Dec 1.

In an interview with PNA on Thursday, Indang Tourism Officer Marianito Nuestro said the festivities are in time for the town’s 362nd founding anniversary, when it was established as a separate town from Silang in 1655 after some 70 years as a sub-ordinate barrio.

Nuestro said around 1,000 townsfolks and revelers are expected to join the annual festivities that reflect the town’s main preoccupation with agriculture and agri-tourism, and now spruced up with commercial and service centers.

Indang Mayor Perfecto V. Fidel will lead the kick-off rites on Nov. 27 for the five-day celebration themed “Pagdiriwang ng nagkakaisang Indangeño para sa ating patuloy na pag-asenso (celebration of the united Indangeños for sustainable development)."

Fidel said the first day of the celebration would focus on the millennials and youth, with kiddie activities starting at 7 a.m. on Nov. 27 and a local rock band performing by 7 p.m.

Spicing up the festivities on Nov. 28 is a street dancing competition among 16 performing groups from Indang’s elementary, junior, and high school students and a talent competition for the "Mr. and Ms. Indang 2017 Search" at 6 p.m.

A Cavite festivity will not be complete without the “karakol,” a traditional religious dance procession, set on Nov. 29 from 1 p.m., to be followed by a local singing competition called “Tawag ng Tanghalan 2017” at 6 p.m.

On Nov. 30, town organizers are set to pay tribute to national hero Andres Bonifacio in simple rites at the Bonifacio Shrine starting at 6:30 a.m., marking the historic day the revolutionary Katipunan movement leader was arrested in Barangay Limbon here following his defeat in the assembly election at the Tejeros Convention.

On Dec. 1, around 36 barangay contingents featuring various floats made of indigenous and recycled materials for pro-environment motif will participate in the Grand Parade, where prizes are at stake for the best float.

The barangay beauty and personality pageant contenders for the “Mr. & Ms. Indang 2017” tilt will join the parade. The celebration culminates in the coronation night by 6 p.m.

Fidel and Vice Mayor Ismael D. Rodil will spearhead the town’s Agri-Expo Trade Fair, which will showcase and market various Indangeño products from Nov. 30 to Dec. 1.

The town’s celebration will also revisit the town’s name origin “Inrang” or “yndan,” a tree which was also called “Anubing” and was referred to as “Magdiwang” (celebration) town during the Spanish period.

The town was also known for its revolutionary name “Walang Tinag” (immovable), referring to the place's revolutionary character, with Bonifacio’s arrest and as home to revolutionary figures like Severino Delas Alas, a member of General Emilio Aguinaldo’s party during his retreat to Northern Luzon; General Ambrosio Mojica, a politico-military governor of the first Philippine Republic in Samar and Leyte; Hugo Ilagan and Jose Coronel, both Cavite delegates to the revolutionary Congress in Tarlac. (PNA)
