Mayor Jed Patrick Mabilog is eyeing a New Year’s eve countdown along the Treñas Boulevard here with fireworks fired from a barge at the Iloilo River.
The unique project will also ask the cooperation of radio music stations here to synchronize their sounds with that of the fireworks during the New Year celebration along the river.
Mabilog said he would want city residents to experience a unique celebration outside their homes with fireworks and other pyrotechnics to be produced by firework makers in the country and that of the Arevalo fireworks cooperative.
The fireworks cooperative has 20 registered firework makers with more than 300 members who made pyrotechnic making as their main source of livelihood.
As recommended by the Task Force on Trade Investment and Promotions Board chaired by local businessman Felix Tiu, the New Year celebration along the river is expected to eliminate or reduce accident cases caused by indiscriminate use of fireworks and firecrackers.
The task force also recommended to ban ground firecrackers and fireworks and instead have these go up in the air to accompany the fireworks. (PNA)
