The Iloilo City Anti-Smoking Task Force (ICAST) here said that most of the college students they have apprehended for the violation of the city smoking ordinance belong to the medical profession.
ICAST chairman, city councilor Joshua Alim said that the college students were taking up nursing, medicine and other related courses in some of the prestigious universities in the city.
He said that most of the students were caught smoking near their schools and even wearing their nursing or medicine uniform.
He said that ICAST has apprehended some of these students smoking and drinking alcoholic beverages as early as 2 p.m. Most of them were also female students taking medical-related courses, he said.
Alim said that this was very alarming since the students did not seem to understand the repercussion of their actions, adding that they should be reminded that as future medical professionals, they should know the effects of smoking to their health and their jobs.
Alim said that ICAST has informed the college deans where these students are studying. ICAST is set to have a dialogue with universities and colleges to discuss the city’s anti-smoking ordinance, he said.
He also lamented that about 30 percent of the violators of the city smoking ordinance were students.
Meanwhile, he noted that students caught violating the smoking ordinance were the first to pay their citation tickets at the city treasurer’s office.
