Heavy rain causes knee-deep flood in Basak, Cebu City

Residents of Tagunol Street in Barangay Basak San Nicolas, Cebu City experienced knee-deep flood on Wednesday, August 16, 2023, after a heavy downpour that lasted for several hours.

The Cebu City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (CCDRRMO) advised motorists and drivers to avoid Tagunol Street, which connects Barangays Basak San Nicolas and Cogon Pardo, due to severe flooding. The CCDRRMO said they were monitoring the situation and deploying responding units to assist the affected residents.

The flood also affected nearby areas such as A.C. Cortes Avenue and some parts of Barangay Looc in Mandaue City. Some residents had to evacuate their homes as the water level rose rapidly.

According to the Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration in Mactan (Pagasa-Mactan), the heavy rain was caused by thunderstorms that developed over Cebu and nearby provinces. Pagasa-Mactan issued a series of thunderstorm advisories on Wednesday, warning of possible flash floods and landslides in low-lying and mountainous areas.

The weather agency also forecasted more rains in the next few days due to the southwest monsoon or habagat, which is being enhanced by a low pressure area (LPA) near Luzon. Pagasa-Mactan advised the public to stay alert and prepare for possible weather disturbances.

The CCDRRMO reminded the residents to practice proper waste disposal and avoid throwing garbage into the waterways, which could clog the drainage system and worsen the flooding problem.
