Filipino Army Released by Communist Rebels

After 14 days in captivity, an Army soldier based in Compostela Valley Province and a police officer based in Davao Oriental were simultaneously released by their captors, the New People’s Army (NPA) today, Monday.

Police Officer (PO) 2 Jerwel Montecillo Tugade was released around 11:30 a.m. in Purok 8, New Visayas, Lupon, Davao Oriental while Private First Class (PFC) El Brian Canedo, a Scout Ranger, was freed around 12 noon.

They were both released to multi-sectoral and religious groups in coordination with the provincial officials and municipal officials in their respective places.

Tugade, who was held by the NPA’s Wilfredo Zapanta Command Front Committee 18, was fetched by Mayor Pete Mejos of Banay-banay, Davao Oriental, Mayor Domingo Lim of Lupon, Mayor Michelle Rabat of Mati, and Davao Oriental Board Members Pepot Lara and Tina Yu.

Canedo, on the other hand, was released to Compostela Valley Governor Arturo Uy and Compostela Valley Representative Marica Apsay. - pna
