Politicians seeking elective posts in next year’s elections are encouraged to file their Certificates of Candidacy (COCs) early.
This was the appeal of lawyer Marlon Casquejo, the acting Region 11 director of the Commission on Elections (Comelec), adding that the filing period of COCs is five days shorter than the previous elections.
Casquejo said this is to remind candidates who usually file their COCs in the last minute that filing this time will end by 5 p.m. during the last day.
The filing period is from October 1 to 5, or from Monday to Friday and the acceptance of the COCs will be during office hours only.
During this period, the Comelec will suspend the registration of voters but will continue afterwards until October 31.
Earlier, Comelec Commissioner Rene Sarmiento said that five days is enough for the candidates to file their COCs. The early schedule for the filing of COCs will give the election agency enough time to resolve petitions seeking to disqualify certain candidates.
The poll body will also create a campaign finance unit to look into the expenses of the candidates once the campaign period would start on March 29 next year. The candidate who is member of a political party shall only allocate a budget of P3 per voter. Those who are independent bets should have a budget of P5 per voter.
