New swindling modus operandi reported in Dumaguete
DUMAGUETE CITY, Jan. 26 (PNA) -- A new modus operandi for swindling was uncovered in Dumaguete City following the report of a pizza house owner who fell victim to the new scam.
Daphe Padriga Padilla cautioned establishments that cater to free deliveries, like pizza houses, burger houses and the like to be extra careful in receiving orders by phone.
She said these individuals are not after the product or the services being offered but cellphone loads, which is by the thousands of pesos.
Padilla said Neva’s pizza in Piapi, this city, received orders for 21 boxes of pizza from a caller who identified himself as a certain Dr. Rico Absin of Silliman University Medical Center (SUMC), who is a resident in that barangay.
The caller said at least five doctors are contributing for the payment to include a certain Dr. Arco of SUMC.
While on the way to SUMC to deliver the ordered pizza, Padilla was told by the caller to add soft drinks and paper plates which she didn’t mind because the order was worth more than PHP4,000.
The caller then ordered a cellphone load of PHP600 to be added to the payables in the name of Dr. Arco.
Since only PHP500 was loaded, the caller requested for another PHP500.
At the SUMC information center, Padilla wanted to connect to Dr. Arco’s clinic and that of Dr. Absin, only to be told by the secretary the number loaded with PHP1000 is not owned by Arco and that Dr. Rico Absin is out of town.
After knowing she was swindled, Padilla distributed the PHP4,000 worth of pizza to the construction workers outside the hospital, the SUMC information office and the to personnel at the police station while reporting the swindling incident. (PNA)
