DCPO cancels muzzle taping of firearms

DAVAO CITY, Dec. 14 (PNA) -- The Davao City Police Office (DCPO) will no longer tape gun muzzles as scheduled on Friday following an order from the Philippine National Police (PNP) on non-taping of firearms during the Yuletide season.

This was announced by newly-designated Deputy Director of the DCPO, Supt. Ireneo Caburnay, during the AFP-PNP Press Corps forum on Wednesday at the Royal Mandaya Hotel.

DCPO was scheduled to tape gun muzzles on Friday but cancelled the activity following an order from the PNP.

Caburnay said they already received guidance from PNP headquarters in Camp Crame that they no longer need to tape gun muzzles but emphasized on the need to follow laws against indiscriminate firing of firearms.

Caburnay said all members of the PNP know they are prohibited from firing guns unless there is legitimate police operation or in exercise of law enforcement when life of a police officer is in danger such as in a buy-bust operation.

“They are aware but we need to remind them that exercising discipline within their ranks is part of their oath,” he said in an interview.

For more than 10 years now, taping of gun muzzles during the Yuletide season is traditionally practiced by the PNP to stop illegal discharge of firearms due to incidents of stray bullets hitting Christmas and New Year’s revelers.

The non-taping of gun muzzle was approved by PNP Chief Ronald dela Rosa giving his full trust on all police officers as disciplined professionals.

To assure that revelers are safe against being hit by stray bullets, Caburnay said they only need to remind police officers especially the 600 new cops who joined the PNP in Davao region. They also include the police officers who have been re-assigned in the city to follow DCPO’s kind of discipline during the Yuletide revelry.

In times of break or when police officers are allowed to go off-duty by their station commanders, Caburnay said firearms are left inside their homes. (PNA)

John 3:16-18 ESV
For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son (Jesus Christ), that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him. Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only Son of God.
