Davao region generally peaceful on New Year’s Day

DAVAO CITY, Jan. 2 (PNA) -- The Philippine National Police (PNP) said Davao region was peaceful during the New Year celebration with no major untoward incident reported in provinces and major cities in the area.

In a phone interview, PNP PRO-11 spokesperson Chief Inspector Andrea dela Cerna said 95 percent of the police force in the region was in the field on Saturday until Sunday, January 1 in designated checkpoints and rendered police visibility patrols.

Mobilizing the full force of PNP personnel in the region is part of the directive of PNP Chief Director General Ronald “Bato” dela Rosa to ensure the safety of residents during the New Year’s celebration.

Dela Cerna said PNP Chief dela Rosa, together with PNP PRO-11 Regional Director Chief Supt. Manuel Gaerlan, conducted inspections in provinces, cities and other strategic areas in the region and Davao City since Saturday.

“As of 12:00 noon Sunday, January 1, we have negative report on stray bullet incident as well as cases of indiscriminate firing in the region,” dela Cerna pointed out.

She added that no burning or fire incidents due to firecrackers were recorded in Davao region since the start of the merrymaking on New Year’s Eve until noon of Sunday.

“Davao region is generally peaceful,” dela Cerna stressed.

She, however, took note of arrests made by the PNP over violation of the law on the selling and possession of firecrackers.

Firecrackers were reportedly confiscated by authorities in Panabo City, Davao del Norte on Saturday evening as well as in Davao del Sur province.

No further details were given by dela Cerna as to the volume of firecrackers and the number of persons apprehended in said areas.

The Davao City Police Office (DCPO) also arrested a couple of minors in possession of banned “piccolo” and “kwitis”.

The minors were already turned over to their parents, she added.

A 29-year-old man will be facing charges after he was arrested selling firecrackers in Bankerohan Public Market in Davao City around 1:00pm on December 31.

SPO1 Rizalito Lerios Clapis III, investigator from the San Pedro Police Station, identified the arrested person as one Hamid Dimakuta, a resident of San Pedro Extension Barangay 6-A, this city.

Dela Cerna said the PNP in the region will continue to ensure the security of the public by conducting check points and police visibility patrols. (PNA)

John 3:16-18 ESV
For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son (Jesus Christ), that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him. Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only Son of God.
