Clean Cebu City
« on: January 02, 2011, 08:26:57 AM »
Cebu City Mayor Michael Rama hopes for a cleaner city in 2011, saying his administration has been working hard to achieve this.

Rama said his administration has reestablished the rule of law by putting a stop to vigilante-style killings in his first six months as mayor.

City Hall, he said, has also focused on solving the problems of traffic and garbage collection around the clock, as well sent the signal that errant workers will not be tolerated.

“Carbon used to be a jungle before. It has not completely changed yet, but it made some good appearance because its alleys and streets are now passable. People are no longer afraid to go there,” Rama said.

His most significant accomplishment for the year, by his own reckoning, is changing how people perceive the Cebu City Medical Center (CCMC). It now has an atmosphere of hope, he said.

The previous administration planned to sell the hospital, but Rama was able to convince his predecessor, Rep. Tomas Osmeña (Cebu City, South District), to let him handle the CCMC.

Rama admitted he still has to address red tape in City Hall, as paperwork for asphalting, paving and street lighting projects is still in the processing stage. - pna

John 3:16-18 ESV
For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son (Jesus Christ), that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him. Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only Son of God.

I'd like to give every politician, who dreams an impossible dream wide awake and exerts even the smallest effort to realize it, a pat in the back. It's reassuring to know that at least Rama has not grown immune to Cebu's stench, as we often tend to when we are exposed to it daily.

I also root for him when he refused to give permit to the liquor industry to sell alcohol on Fuente Osmena during the Sinulog, despite the well-organized lobby. It takes courage for a politician to turn down a request from such a powerful business clique.

On the other hand, in neighboring Mandaue City, where I travel everyday to CDU, I am simply amused by the sight of policemen handling traffic on the S&R intersection along the reclamation highway. They have a police box on the island that is emblazoned with a glaring logo of Tanduay. I can imagine the unspoken advertisement: "Drive safe--Tanduay."

your info on the liquor sale ban at fuente caught my attention, ben.  i remember (being required to join the sinulog by our office ages ago) when we had to hunker down to protect our heads and run for our lives, in full sinulog regalia, when those beer bottles started flying in our direction.  thrown by drunks, of course, who had the habit of cruising fuente and gen. maxilom ave.  i hated the sinulog since then.

Makakatawa man pud mag-imagine ani, isles. Tourists could very well mistake the scene for a reenactment of the Battle of Mactan--until beer bottles hit them. Now I know why Rama stood pat on his decision not to allow liquor in the area.
