BJMP eyes using local government-owned facility in San RamonZAMBOANGA CITY, March 3 (PNA) -- The Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP) is planning to use the vacated detention facility of the local government located at the property of the San Ramon Prison and Penal Colony in this city.
The facility, which was built by the city government, was used as detention facility for the arrested members of the Moro National Liberation Front (MNLF) involved in the 2013 siege.
The facility is now vacant since the detained MNLF members were transferred to the government detention facility in Bicutan, Taguig City.
Chief Insp. Ervin Diaz, warden of the Zamboanga City Reformatory Center (ZCRC), on Friday said they will utilize the San Ramon facility as the number of inmates is expected to increase once the police resume its anti-drug campaign.
The Philippine National Police (PNP) is set to resume soon the anti-drug campaign dubbed as Oplan Tokhang after President Rodrigo Duterte ordered its resumption.
Diaz said the ZCRC is too congested at present since there are 2,392 inmates at the detention facility, which is designed for only 800 detainees.
He said those who would be detained at the Ran Ramon detention facility are those with lighter offenses and whose court appearance are scheduled several months away.
He said the facility in San Ramon can accommodate more than 200 inmates.
Due to congested jail, the warden is worried over the security as well as the health of the inmates.
“Anything can happen because of congestion. We have to remember that we are dealing with people of different behavior and behavior changes in just seconds,†he said. (PNA)
