July is disaster consciousness month
by JN Aragon
Daet, Camarines Norte (29 June 2005) -– With the theme “Safe ka ba?” Programa Laban sa Kalamidad Tungo sa Pag-unlad, the Bicol Regional Disaster Coordinating Council (RDCC) will spearhead observance of the National Disaster Consciousness Month (NDCM) starting Friday, July 1, at the Provincial Agro Sports Center, here.

Executive Order No. 137, dated August 10, 1999, declares July as National Disaster Consciousness Month to institutionalize the civil defense deputization program. NDCM activities aim to increase the awareness of every Filipino to the threats of disaster and for a better appreciation of the government’s disaster preparedness program.

Members of the Bicol Regional Disaster Coordinating Council, which finalized the calendar of activities last June 16, agreed to let the province of Camarines Norte host the opening ceremonies this year. The province had been awarded with the Regional Gawad Kalasag last year as the Outstanding Provincial Disaster Coordinating Council (PDCC) in Bicol.

This year’s opening ceremony will commence with a motorcade after which RDCC Chairman, P/CSupt Victor B. Boco, as Guest of Honor, will give the keynote address. To cap the day, simulation exercises and joint RDCC/PDCC meeting will be held after the opening program.

To better inform and educate the general public, the Office of Civil Defense, in partnership with government and private establishments has lined up activities geared towards effective information/education campaign by hosting an Open House for students, airing video clips on disaster preparedness through various cable networks, airing radio plugs, capability enhancement of local disaster councils, mall exhibit, distribution of “SAFE KA BA?” posters/flyers and hanging streamers.

The observance of NDCM is undertaken all over the nation to heighten the awareness on disasters affecting communities and more importantly, what every individual can do to prepare and prevent the adverse effects of disasters.

Through information, proper avenues and the participation of communities, disaster consciousness can be raised in every Filipino, instilling a pro-active approach to disasters. As President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo said, “Every Filipino’s life is priceless. Let’s all be safe.” (OCD)

John 3:16-18 ESV
For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son (Jesus Christ), that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him. Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only Son of God.
