Mayor Manuel Sagarbarria has confirmed that a replica of the famous Cathedral Bell Tower that stood for several years at the Rizal Boulevard in Dumaguete had recently become a haven for illicit activities such as the illegal drugs trade and “prostitutionâ€.
The mayor had ordered to demolish the structure about two weeks ago, explaining that it had become more of a liability now to the city as it no longer served its original purpose as a tourism one-stop shop and display room.
It is useless having the replica Bell Tower there when the real, centuries-old tourist draw can be viewed a few blocks away at its location near the St. Catherine of Alexandria Cathedral, he said.
It was also a waste of government money to maintain the same structure that was no longer being utilized after the city tourism office moved to a new building at the Quezon Park.
Sagarbarria said plans are afoot in making the boulevard appealing to tourists and locals alike. (PNA)
