SAMAL, Bataan -- Town Mayor Generosa dela Fuente has appealed to commuters and residents for understanding over the delayed completion of the Samal bridge that started construction sometime in September 2016.
The project is one of 10 bridges in Region 3 that Tokwing Construction Corp. is building as part of a package deal under the government’s Design and Build Program.
Reportedly funded with PHP18 million, it is the first bridge project in the country under the program.
Tokwing Construction Corp., under contract with the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) Region 3, has to finish the bridge by September 26, 2017 but the date was moved to November 25, 2017 as some problems have to be settled.
Contractor project engineer Chito Sampang said Wednesday that one lane of the bridge would be passable first week of December while the whole bridge would be totally traversable before the end of December 2017.
The mayor said she understands the problem of commuters but asked for patience and sacrifice.
“As a mother of Samal, my small wish for our constituents is to broaden their understanding. In development, there is a little sacrifice. Since we are already sacrificing, let us increase (it) a little bit (more) because there will be more convenience ahead of us. Be a little more (patient)," Dela Fuente said.
She admitted that the bridge construction was a little bit slow but what she could only do was to always remind the project engineer of the project's deadline.
Dela Fuente said the bridge would soon be finished but she had some issues to address with the contractor.
Bataan first district Engineer Erlindo Flores said the elevation of the bridge is high but would affect residents once the approach and transition to the bridge is elevated.
“I will talk with the project engineer on what is good to make it favorable to everyone so that the work will go on smoothly," Flores said. (PNA)
