ILOILO CITY -- The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) in Iloilo has prepared initial plans for the expected five to 10 percent increase of passengers this holiday season.
PCG-Iloilo commander, Lieutenant Ramil Palabrica, on Thursday said they are planning to activate the "Oplan Ligtas Biyahe" middle of December to ensure the hassle-free travel of commuters.
“Students and professionals are expected to go home, as well as individuals or families from Manila or abroad for the long holidays,” he said in an interview.
Initially, Palabrica said they are planning to put up public assistance desks in every port in Iloilo.
They will also deploy additional personnel to inspect boats coming in and going out of ports to avoid overloading and possible unscrupulous acts of personnel who might take advantage of the heavy number of passengers.
Strict inspection of baggage will also be done to prevent entry of illegal drugs and deadly weapons.
Coast guard personnel will be on standby to respond to any untoward incidents.
An inter-agency meeting will be conducted starting first week of December to finalize all the preparations for the holiday season. The inter-agency is composed of the PCG, Philippine National Police (PNP), Philippine Coast Guard Auxiliary, Maritime Industry Authority (MARINA),Department of Transportation (DOTr) and the Philippine Ports Authority (PPA), among others.
