Baguio Congressman Bernardo Vergara on Friday said that he supports the move for the re-imposition of death penalty in the wake of the commission of heinous crimes.
He said however that the Courts must always afford the accused with due process and the conviction of any person should be based on moral certainty or the so-called quantum of evidence which is beyond reasonable doubt.
After the gruesome killings of two vehicle traders from Metro Manila and other sensational killings in the country, many of the lawmakers have come up with the opinion that the death penalty re-imposition will serve to stem the tide of criminality in the country.
Records show that although death is imposed as penalty to capital offenses and certain complex crimes, the government has suspended its imposition after the clamor of the Church and various human rights groups, including other civic organizations.
Despite the clamor of some legislators for death re-imposition, there are still some of them not sold to the idea.
Meanwhile, Vergara also said that he is not supporting the move to hasten the process of annulling marriage.
He explained that there are enough laws by which couples make their choice of how to end their relationships saying that "I always support the family unity and the sanctity of marriage." - pna
