One communist-New People’s Army (NPA) rebel was killed while unaccounted number of other rebels were believed critically wounded when combat maneuvering troops of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) attack a rebel encampment in Tabon-Tabon area, Barangay Mahagsay, San Luis, Agusan del Sur, said regional Army spokesman Maj. Mitchele B. Anayron Jr., on Friday.
Maj. Anayron also said the NPA camp was finally overran after 20 minutes fierce gunbattle.
The camp belong to guerrilla-Front Committee 88 of the CPP-NPA North-Central Mindanao Regional Committee (NCMRC), the Army spokesman said.
In a flash report to Northeastern and Northern Mindanao Fourth Infantry (Diamond) Division chief Brig. Gen. Mario Chan, Lt. Col. Andres Centeno, commanding officer of the Army’s 26th Infantry Battalion, said the NPA camp was completely captured at 3 pm on Thursday.
The encampment, consist of eight bunkers with kitchen and makeshift huts, training ground and posting stations, he said.
Operating combat troops also seized war materials such as M16 and shotgun rifles, assorted live ammunition, foods, personal belongings and anti-government documents with high intelligence value, said Maj. Anayron.
“As of press time we cannot still determined if how many wounded to the fleeing communists as hot pursuit operation is still going on,†added Maj. Anayron.
Gen. Chan already deployed gunship attack helicopters of the Philippine Air Force strike wing and helicopter wing to extend air cover to the pursuing ground troops.
No reported casualty on the government side.
“Just like what the commanding general of the Army wanted, 4th ID troops can be counted to help the Philippine Army deliver the winning shot,†said Gen. Chan.
He added: “This is just one of 4ID’s efforts and the populace under our area of responsibility can expect their soldiers to do their very best to secure them and help the local government units and local government agency bring peace and development in the areaâ€. (PNA)
