3 evacuation centers to be constructed in Western Visayas
ILOILO CITY, Jan. 11 (PNA) -- Three evacuation centers will be constructed in Western Visayas this year, according to the Office of Civil Defense (OCD)-6.
The project is an initiative of the National Disaster Risk Reduction Management Council (NDRRMC) but will be funded by the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH).
In an interview Wednesday, OCD-6 regional director Rosario Cabrera said that the processing of the requirements for the project is still ongoing but the DPWH has already identified the sites.
She added that have already coordinated with the concerned local government units where the centers will be put up. These are Iloilo City, Antique and Capiz, all highly prone to disasters, according to Cabrera.
Cabrera disclosed that DPWH has allotted Php36 million for the construction of the evacuation centers, which will have an area of 2,000 square meters each.
She explained that they no longer include Iloilo province because it already has a Php20 million worth of evacuation center in the municipality of Oton, which was a project of the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD).
The evacuation center in Oton is a three-storey concrete structure with 1,000 square meters floor area that could accommodate 500 to 600 evacuees.
Once the evacuation centers are completed, Cabrera said that the public is assured that they have a place to go to in times of disasters like floods and landslides.
Meanwhile, Cabrera is advising the public to be vigilant and maintain safety while the region is currently experiencing light to moderate rains and isolated thunderstorm due to low pressure area (LPA).
As of the moment, there are no reported cases of landslides in the region according to OCD-6. (PNA)
