The Commission on Human Rights (CHR) is set to conduct an autopsy on the remains of a 17-year-old girl who died after she was allegedly gang-raped by four men in the southern town of Sta. Catalina in Negros Oriental recently.
Jess Cañete, CHR special investigator for Negros Oriental, said on Thursday that he has already requested the CHR central office to send a medico legal officer and a forensic team to exhume the remains of the girl who was buried late last week.
Cañete said he received a directive from his direct superior, CHR Region 7 Director Atty. Alejandro Alonso, to conduct an independent inquiry into the incident which has now sparked public interest due to perceived discrepancies in the circumstances surrounding the case.
These include an alleged attempt by some quarters to muddle the case, but Cañete said he will not allow this to happen.
He did not elaborate although he hinted at getting to the bottom of the incident.
The victim, “Janet†(not her real name), had claimed in a dying declaration, that she was gang-raped repeatedly by four men, one of whom she had named.
Ten minutes after talking to her father, she died.
The father told reporters that they were not aware of her ordeal until shortly before she died, when they noticed unusual things about her, to include infected breasts and genitals.
Meanwhile, one of the suspects, Sherwin Gabo, has denied involvement in the gang rape, saying he was just being used as a scapegoat because of a previous similar charge.
He admitted that he and two others were charged of gang-raping a 16-year-old girl sometime in 2002 in Metro Manila but they were all acquitted.
