Coro and its Port -- Coro, Venezuela
coro - UNESCO heritage sites across the globe - Lifestyle, Culture and Arts

Founded in 1527, the town of Coro dates back to the earliest years of Spanish colonization of South America's Caribbean coast. The town reached its peak in the late 18th and early 19th century and still consists of some 600 historic buildings. With its buildings made from earth, rather than stone, Coro is the only surviving example of a rich fusion of local building traditions with Spanish and Dutch architectural techniques.

These structures stretch across the country's northern and western seaboards and are particularly fortified in and around port cities such as Rotterdam and The Hague.

Why it is in danger: Heavy rain in 2004 and 2005 damaged a great number of structures. It was added to the endangered list because UNESCO feared planned construction works could have considerable impact on the site.

Circle of Timbuktu -- Timbuktu, Mali
timbuktu - UNESCO heritage sites across the globe - Lifestyle, Culture and Arts

Timbuktu was an intellectual and spiritual capital and a center for the propagation of Islam throughout Africa in the 15th and 16th centuries.

Its three great mosques, Djingareyber, Sankore and Sidi Yahia, recall Timbuktu's golden age.

Although continuously restored, these monuments are today under threat from desertification.

Why it is in danger:
Timbuktu was placed on UNESCO's list of endangered World Heritage Sites in June 2012 after Islamist group Ansar Dine destroyed tombs that were shrines to Muslim saints.

An Ansar Dine spokesman said that all shrines in the city, including the remaining World Heritage sites, would be destroyed because the group considered them to be examples of idolatry.

Tombs of Buganda Kings -- Kasubi, Uganda
uganda - UNESCO heritage sites across the globe - Lifestyle, Culture and Arts

The star attraction of the tombs site is the former palace of the rulers of Uganda's Buganda kingdom, built in 1882. Four royal tombs now lie within the main building, which is an architectural wonder made from organic materials -- principally wood, thatch, reed, wattle and daub.

Why it is in danger:
Muzibu Azaala Mpanga, the main tomb structure at the site, was almost completely destroyed by fire in 2010 and fire remains a threat.

Historic town of Zabid -- Zabid, Yemen
zabid - UNESCO heritage sites across the globe - Lifestyle, Culture and Arts

The fortified coastal town of Zabid is an outstanding archaeological and historical site. It was the capital of Yemen from the 13th to the 15th century and it played an important role in the Arab and Muslim world for centuries because of its Islamic university.

Why it is in danger: UNESCO says there has been a serious deterioration in the city's heritage, with many houses replaced by concrete buildings and its ancient souk in a deteriorating state.

bam - UNESCO heritage sites across the globe - Lifestyle, Culture and Arts

The origins of the desert city of Bam can be traced back to the sixth to fourth centuries BC. Its heyday was from the seventh to 11th centuries, when it was at the crossroads of important trade routes and known for the production of silk and cotton garments.

Its huge citadel, Arg-e Bam, was built using mud layers and sun-dried mud bricks and includes vaulted and domed structures.

Why it is in danger: An earthquake in 2003 caused great damage to the site.

Bagrati Cathedral -- Kutaisi, Georgia
bagraticathedral - UNESCO heritage sites across the globe - Lifestyle, Culture and Arts

Bagrati Cathedral was completed in the early 11th century but was partly destroyed in 1691. The Gelati Monastery, whose main buildings were constructed between the 12th and 17th centuries, is a well-preserved complex, with wonderful mosaics and wall paintings. The cathedral and monastery illustrate the flowering of medieval architecture in Georgia.

Why it is in danger: According to UNESCO, a reconstruction project could undermine the authenticity and integrity of the site.

Decani Monastery and other medieval monuments -- Kosovo
kosovo - UNESCO heritage sites across the globe - Lifestyle, Culture and Arts

The monuments are a series of churches from the 13th and 14th century, featuring frescoes and paintings in the Byzantine-Romanesque style. This distinctive style of wall painting was developed in the Balkans and played an important role in subsequent Balkan art.

Why it is in danger: UNESCO says a lack of legal protection has allowed the monuments to deteriorate.

Maritime Mercantile City -- Liverpool, UK
liverpool - UNESCO heritage sites across the globe - Lifestyle, Culture and Arts

Six areas in Liverpool's historic center bear witness to the development of what was one of the world's major trading centers during the 18th and 19th centuries. Liverpool played an important role in the growth of the British Empire and became the major port for the mass movement of people from northern Europe to America.

Why it is in danger: UNESCO says a £5.5 billion redevelopment plan for the waterfront, involving the construction of skyscrapers, could "irreversibly damage" historic docklands.

Samarra archaeological city -- Samarra, Iraq
samara - UNESCO heritage sites across the globe - Lifestyle, Culture and Arts

Dating from the seventh century, the ancient city of Samarra was once a powerful Islamic capital city that ruled an empire stretching from Tunisia to Central Asia.

Architectural and artistic innovations developed there spread to the other regions of the Islamic world and beyond. The ninth-century Great Mosque and its spiral minaret are among the most remarkable architectural monuments at the site, 80% of which remain to be excavated.

Why it is in danger: UNESCO says the security situation following the Iraq War and a lack of protection of the site have put Samarra at risk.
