Thai premier visits Makati market
« on: May 24, 2008, 02:57:40 AM »
VISITING Thai Prime Minister Samak Sundaravej got a taste of the Philippine wet market yesterday when he visited the Guadalupe public market in Makati City, where he bought vegetables and meat to cook for Thai Embassy staff in Manila.

Taking a break from his two-day visit here, Samak went around the market accompanied by Agriculture Secretary Arthur Yap, where he checked out rice prices and bought P1,000 worth of tenderloin, brocolli, chicken and shrimp.

“Just like home,” the Thai premier, wearing a barong-like long-sleeved shirt, was heard saying as vendors, market goers and plain kibitzers gawked at him.

Barely speaking to reporters, Samak told Yap that the prices at the Guadalupe market were very much like those in Thailand.

“He seemed surprised and happy that prices were all the same, including rice,” Yap told reporters.

He said Samak’s observation indicated that the prices of goods here, including rice, remained stable despite the perceived rice crisis.

Samak has pledged to export rice to the Philippines to help it cope with a rice shortage.

He said Thailand, the world’s top rice exporter, was more than willing to supply rice to the Philippines at negotiable rates.

“The prime minister just said that in the event that the Philippines should need more rice, Thailand would be more than open to supply,” Yap said.

Meanwhile, the Philippines and Thailand have agreed to urge other members of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations to adopt a single-visa policy to boost tourism in the region.

Executive Secretary Eduardo Ermita said that deal was firmed up at a meeting Thursday between Samak and President Arroyo.

Samak “was very upbeat about tourism,” Ermita said.

“He said that maybe we could agree among Asean, starting with the Philippines-Thailand agreement, [to do away with the] necessity of having a visa for tourists coming in and out of Thailand and vice versa.” Ferdinand Fabella

I like reading news of ASEAN Brotherhood. Very upbeat. Optimistic.
