The Philippine Atmospheric and Geophysical Services Administration (PAGASA) said on Sunday the country would really feel the effects of snow melting in the North Pole due to global warming as it would result to more super typhoons and flooding.

Speaking at the Tinapayan news forum in Sampaloc, Manila, Dr. Prisco Nilo, director of the PAGASA weather bureau, said global warming melts away Arctic sea ice, thus causing seas and oceans to expand.

“Waters from snow melts expand sea water and may even reach as far as the Pacific Ocean," he said.

He said there is possibility that typhoons “Ondoy” and “Pepeng” will happen again in other parts of the Philippines if not in Metro Manila.

Nilo said the CAMANAVA (Caloocan, Malabon, Navotas and Valenzuela areas) is usually hit by flooding.

“The Camanava is usually under flood water. Global warming will worsen the situation,” he said.

Nilo said there is a need for the government to implement further mitigating measures to lessen the effect of global warming.

Nilo also appealed to the public to fully cooperate with the government to mitigate the effects of global warming.

“Each of everyone of us can do our share to help the government to deal global warming. Information drive is really important,” he said.

Meanwhile, Nilo said the country will feel the “El Nino” drought until June. “Some parts of the country will only feel the El Nino for about four months while some around five to six months.”

He recalled that the country experienced encountered water shortage due to effect of the drought.

“Sometime in 1997-1998, we encountered water rationing and we may encounter the same experience if we don’t prepare for this,” he warned.

Nilo said the PAGASA has stepped up its information drive to the public regarding El Nino. (PNA)
