DAVAO CITY – The brother of convicted priest killer Norberto Manero, known as Commander Bucay, has been abducted by New People’s Army (NPA) rebels in Sitio Lorenzo, Barangay Pangyan, Calinan District, here on Sunday.

Former Sgt. Jose Manero was taken by an undetermined number of rebels following their raid on a farm owned by Raffy Lorenzo at around 10:30 a.m. Lorenzo was also seized but released about an hour later, not far from his farm.

Lorenzo’s family owns the Lorenzo Group of Companies where Jose Manero works as security consultant.

Maj. Rodrigo Susmena, spokesperson of the Eastern Mindanao Command, confirmed the abduction. The rebels, he said, were led by Leoncio Pitao, or Commander Parago, head of the Pulang Bagani Command of the NPA’s Southern Mindanao Regional Command.

Susmena said the rebels also took six firearms from the farm.

A source close to the Maneros said the other brothers would retrieve Jose Manero, “dead or alive.”

The source said the abduction could have been sparked by reports about the revival of Alsa Masa, an armed anticommunist group, to be led by the Manero brothers.
In 1999, Jose Manero was considered for a presidential pardon but this was revoked. In January, he was finally freed.

The source, however, said the revival of the Alsa Masa had not been pushed by the military. “The rescue of Manero is the primary concern now,” he said. The NPA has yet to issue a statement on the abduction.
