The publisher and columnist of a small community newspaper in the Philippines was gunned down in the latest in a string of attacks against the media, police said Tuesday.
A gunman riding a motorcycle shot Benefredo Acabal at close range in a busy street in suburban Pasig City near Manila late Monday.
He was rushed to hospital, but died from five gunshot wounds to the body, police said.
It was not immediately clear whether Acabal was shot because of his work as publisher and columnist of a small community paper identified by police as the Pilipino Newsmen, based in Cavite province just south of the capital.
The New York-based Committee to Protect Journalists as well as the French Reporters Without Borders have both branded the Philippines as the second most dangerous place for working journalists outside of Iraq.
At least three journalists were killed in the Philippines last year, while 12 were killed in 2006.
