UE confers honorary degree upon Ombudsman Morales
25 September 2013

The University of the East (UE) today conferred upon Ombudsman Conchita Carpio Morales the degree of Doctor of Laws, honoris causa, in convocation ceremonies at the UE Manila campus, on the occasion of UE’s 67th Foundation Anniversary.

The conferment was “in recognition of her outstanding accomplishments in the field of law and jurisprudence for delivering justice with courage, and her unequivocal integrity during her untarnished 42 years of dedicated service to the government.”

In her acceptance speech, Ombudsman Morales stated that she is “deeply humbled by this special recognition” and “honored to be now considered a daughter of Lualhati,” UE’s bronze icon.

“The accolade by an esteemed institution goes far beyond what I would have imagined for myself in 1968 when I graduated from the University of the Philippines College of Law,” she added.

Ombudsman Morales noted that UE juxtaposed its 67th founding anniversary with that of the 150th birth anniversary of Gat. Andres Bonifacio, and remarked that “f Bonifacio were alive today, he would have taken his advocacy to the next level, not against colonial powers this time but against the scourge of corruption.”

UE’s theme, “Isang Supremong Anibersaryo sa UE,” aims to salute Bonifacio’s legacy.

Ombudsman Morales remarked that “in these contemporary times, the life and legacy of Bonifacio still find significant parallelisms in the life of our nation,” and illustrated that imilar to Bonifacio’s gun-and-powder revolution, we are in the midst of a digital revolution,” citing the benefits of social media.

Similar to Bonifacio’s bolo, the Filipino is now armed with a smartphone as the weapon of choice,” she stated.

Romans 10:9-10
"If you declare with your mouth, Jesus is Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you profess your faith and are saved."
