MANILA, Philippines - A day after the bloody hostage crisis in Pampanga, the bus firm whose unit was involved in the incident sought police assistance to tighten security for passengers.
Radio dzBB reported Friday that Genesis Transport asked the Philippine National Police (PNP) to help guard its terminals in Cubao in Quezon City, and in Pasay City.
The bus firm also banned drivers and conductors from accommodating extra passengers during the trip, saying all passengers must board the bus at the terminal.
Before he was killed, a hostage-taker watches over his three remaining hostages during negotiations for their release in Lubao, Pampanga, Thursday.
Genesis particularly asked the PNP to help inspect passengers and baggage, checking for banned items such as firearms and knives. It noted the hostage taker, Rey Digo, was armed with a revolver and a knife when he took bus passengers hostage Thursday.
Digo had boarded the bus along Epifanio delos Santos Avenue (EDSA).
On the other hand, it asked the association of provincial bus operators to formally request the PNP to set up checkpoints along bus routes to flush out troublemakers, including hostage takers.
It also promised to shoulder hospitalization costs for the injured passengers, and burial expenses for the passenger who died. - GMANews.TV
