MANILA, Philippines -- The blood spilled in fighting between government troops and Moro secessionists in the South is on the hands of President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, the United Opposition (UNO) said Tuesday.

"President Arroyo has blood on her hands," opposition leaders said, blaming her "selfish agenda" for the resumption of hostilities in Central Mindanao that have left several soldiers and Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) fighters dead, and over a hundred thousand residents displaced.

"Christian and Muslim lives are being lost. Thousands of families are displaced. Soldiers are being killed and wounded," said Makati Mayor Jejomar Binay, UNO president. "Is this the price that Mindanao has to pay just to advance Ms Arroyo's selfish agenda?"

He also expressed dismay about a statement from Malacañang that a shift to a federal system of government through Charter change is the true objective of the controversial memorandum of agreement on ancestral domain with the MILF.

"The real motive for the GRP [Government of the Republic of the Philippines]-MILF MOA on ancestral domain has been finally admitted by President Arroyo," UNO spokesperson Adel Tamano said.

He said the "brouhaha" over the Mindanao peace process was never about justice for the Moro people but about Charter change, which he said has always been on the agenda of the President.

"While the opposition desires peace and justice for Moros and Christians alike, it is clear that this MOA was not really intended as an instrument of peace but rather as a means for maintaining power," he said.

"The MILF would be better off waiting for 2010 to deal with an administration that will deal with them honestly, honorably and in a manner that will include all stakeholders," Tamano added.

In the same statement, UNO National Capital Region chair and San Juan Mayor Jose Victor Ejercito said he is convinced Malacañang is using the Mindanao peace process as a ploy to extend Arroyo's hold on power.

"The so-called MOA signing with MILF and the attempt to postpone the ARMM elections are all parts of a grand scheme to divide the nation and eventually extend the President's stay in Malacañang until after 2010," Ejercito said.

Binay said the concept of a federal Mindanao state created under the provision of the MOA on ancestral domain was not feasible.

"What is being offered to the MILF is not a federal state. You cannot have an independent state -- one that has its own military and can deal with foreign states -- within a federal system," Binay said.

"Malacañang knows that, and yet they went ahead and offered it to the MILF. Obviously, there is duplicity and bad faith in this alleged peace process," he said.( Inquirer.net)

Filipinos are too involved in politics.

How can a country attain economic stability if there is no peace, if we are not united? How can the filipino nation focus on growth if it is contstantly disturbed by political issues, driven by self-interest?

I see no love/service of country, but self-interest amongst our leaders.

Shame on you politicians!
