MANILA, Philippines -- President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo has been advised by a Catholic bishop to “act according to conscience” as there were people considering “drastic moves” against her.

“The President knows what is happening. The President knows what’s in our heart, what she is before God. So I hope that she will act according to what her conscience dictates her,” Caloocan Bishop Deogracias Iniguez said when asked what his birthday message was for the President, who would turn 61 this Saturday.

Iniguez disclosed that there were people thinking of enforcing “drastic moves” to end the perceived evil that was happening now in the country. He did not elaborate.

The bishop was at a forum on Thursday in Quezon City on human rights violations.

“Well every one of us has conscience kaya lang kung minsan pwede kang magmatigas sa sinasabi ng konsyensya mo [but sometimes we harden ourselves to our conscience] and that’s what we are appealing and we’re praying for -- that all of us, pati ang ating Pangulo [including the President], [should really] look at what is happening and she acts according to her conscience,” he said.

“Kung hindi [If not], that will imperil her [Arroyo]… because there are others thinking of drastic moves in order to end this perceived evil that’s happening in our country,” he said.

But Iniguez stopped short of calling for Arroyo’s resignation.

While he was inclined to support the resignation call, Iniguez opted to join those seeking for “genuine solutions” to the problems facing this present administration.

“Sa ngayon kasi ako [For now], although I’m inclined to go with others to ask for the resignation of the President but in due process siguro dapat talagang magkaroon ng [maybe there should really be] special effort for these truths to come out so that walang magsisisi sa atin [nobody can blame us] in the future,” he said.

“Pero [But] from all indications, mukhang talagang [it looks like] the present government is to be blamed for the many ills that are happening in our country but it’s another thing to prove that. Yun nga yung hinihintay nating mangyari [That is what we’re waiting for],” he said.
