EIGHT people were killed while six others were hurt after a man went on a shooting rampage in a remote barangay in Calamba City, Laguna shortly past midnight Monday.
Strafed with M-16. Sonny Marudo, a relative of the victims, looks at a bloodstained bed mattress.
The gunman, Bernabe Limbaga Fiesta, 29, of Kidapawan City in North Cotabato, is at large, said Chief Supt. Ricardo Padilla, Southern Tagalog police chief.
Padilla said Fiesta worked as caretaker of a farm in barangay Hornalan owned by Florencio Peria, a retired master sergeant of the now defunct Philippine Constabulary.
Padilla, quoting witnesses, said Fiesta had complained about being mocked by some residents in the barangay.
Using an M-16 rifle, Fiesta opened fire at a row of residential houses in the barangay at around 12:15 a.m., hitting four houses.
Fiesta was seen by witnesses also shooting a dog, a cow, and a parked vehicle during his escape.
As he was fleeing, Fiesta also aimed the Armalite at a neighbor to whom he said other neighbors have been making fun of him. But he spared the neighbor after seeing angry residents running after him.
Fiesta would have gotten away unidentified but police responders found at the crime scene three magazines for the M-16 rifle. The magazines had engravings that said "Peria PC."
Police then raided Peria's house but did not find the Armalite.
Peria told police that his bandolier with eight magazines was also missing.
Killed in the shooting were Dennis Balisong, 29, and his children Gladys, 8, and Gladyn, 7; Gerry Pili, 49, and his wife Gloria, 39, and their children Mary Jane, 12, Sarah, 9, and Julian, 4.
Injured were Marina Balisong and Demark Balisong, Aurelio Abanilla, Vicente Redondo, Cherry May Pili, and eight-year-old Erika Pili.
Padilla said they are considering the relief of Senior Supt. Felipe Rojas, the Laguna police chief, after two massacres in a span of three days.
Last Friday, robbers killed 10 people inside the Rizal Commercial Bank Corp. bank in Cabuyao.
