A Sad Story About a Filipina Caregiver in the U.S.
« on: September 06, 2007, 09:58:40 PM »
The sealed casket bearing the body of an undocumented Filipino caregiver finally arrived in the Philippines three weeks after she died of an aneurysm in the United States, ABS-CBN News reported.

Lucia Imbaldone, 59, passed away in Chicago, Illinois on July 23.  Her coffin arrived at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport on board an Asiana Airlines flight at noon Wednesday.

Imbaldone lived alone in Chicago and had neither family nor friends to help repatriate her body to the Philippines. She had no working permit.

Through the Philippine consulate in Chicago, Filipinos from all over the US were able to raise $7,500, enough to ship her remains home and help support her orphaned family.

Officials of the consulate said donations poured in as concerned Filipinos and organizations paid their last respects during the funeral service over the weekend.

At noon Wednesday family members led by eldest daughter Liberty Martinez received the casket bearing Imbaldone's remains at the airport. They thanked all those who helped repatriate Imbaldone's remains.

Martinez said her mother worked 24 hours a day for the past nine years in order to support her family back home.

Her daughter also said that Imbaldone did not tell them about her condition throughout her stay in Chicago.

Despite being an illegal alien, Martinez praised her mother for her sacrifices.

Vice-Consul Roberto Bernardo, for his part, said the consulate is prepared to help Filipinos in need regardless of immigration status.

Naa pod diri bag-o lang. Two weeks ago, magtiayon nga caregiver from my town, Dipolog, nanuroy sila paingon sa Mackinaw Island (venue of Superman's "Womewhere In Time" ) on their way on the boat, a border patrol checked their identifications and everyting, nasakpan man sila magjuwa nga overstaying, gi priso intawon or bond ug 20grand. My peeps nag amot2x ug datung pero they only collected 10 grand so nahibilin ang banana sa priso... luoy pod.

looy bitaw but kahibalo man unta sila sa immigration laws sa amerika.  if u are here for a visitor's visa, then u are not allowed to work kay visitor ra gud.  clear man na kaau.  if motuman lang unta sa balaod, then wala unta problema.  i understand their plight.  it's so sad, but what about those who were having a hard time, (not to mention, sayo tawn ug mata then pila pa jud, as in kinadaghanang pila, then dako pa jud nagasto sa pagprocess sa papers) just to get their paperworks legally?  it is unfair for them.

The lady died for the sake of her family and I just hope that the supported children saved enough for life existence especially now that the bread earner already gone. I pity more for the relatives left behind! The dead one....her sacrifices is over and may she rest in peace.

Willmerit, your worries will be left unanswered for this is already a Pilipino trend.  Our co-fellowmen are forced to go out without not even thinking the big risk and all for Family sake.  Just an ex.: we have more than hundreds of nurses graduates and how many hospitals we have?  If only our country has offered opportunity for the young generations, who likes to leave his/her country if she has a good life in luxury?

well, i don't know what to say next.  i am just expressing my views about that matter.  let's just hope and pray that the government can come up with better solutions to solve this mounting problem of poverty in our country.  i think, we can make a difference!

I hope that their could be any changes in the future.  Poverty was/is an existing tragedy in our country.

Have you noticed or observed...that mostly poor countries are mostly too religious?   You are right, prayer give more strength  to the hopeless people of this World.
