HONG KONG - Fifteen Filipino women tourists who worked as prostitutes in Hong Kong’s red light district of Wan Chai were sentenced each to two months in jail on Thursday, authorities said Friday.
The Filipinas have been charged with soliciting for an immoral purpose and breaching their conditions of stay.
They were all brought to court in three groups and they all admitted the charges before principal magistrate Garry Tallentire.
The magistrate said that Hong Kong welcomes tourists, but if they will work as sex workers then the special administrative region would rather not have them here.
The Filipinas were caught following police anti-vice operations after midnight in Wan Chai on April 9.
Plainclothesmen were deployed all over Wan Chai. Those who approached them and offered lewd service were caught.
In one case, two Filipinas outside the Neptune II bar offered sex for $1,000 and when the officers agreed, the women led them to a hotel on Jaffe Road where the men revealed their identity.
All the Filipinas were also charged with breaching their conditions of stay for taking up work. Hong Kong immigration laws prohibit tourists from taking up work, whether paid or unpaid. - Smiley D. Julve, GMANews.TV
