Diary Of A Pinoy In America - Real Funny
« on: January 19, 2011, 02:22:40 AM »
Dear Diary,

Dec 14:

Finally arrived in America for the first time.  News about the possibility of a White Christmas!

Dec 15:

Wife and I  sat by the window all day watching the snowflakes gently drifting down, covering the trees and the ground. Like the Christmas card my sister sent me.  Oh, how beautiful!!!

(Nicer than the ash fall of Mt. Pinatubo!)

Dec 16:

Awoke to a lovely blanket of crystal white snow covering the landscape. What a fantastic sight! I really enjoyed shoveling my sister's driveway. It was really FUN!!!  A snowplow accidentally covered up the driveway. He waved.  He reminded me of Santa Claus.  I waved back to this nice citizen and shoveled again... no problem.

Dec 17:

Wow! 5 more inches of snow! The temperature dropped down to 5 degrees. The snowplow covered the driveway again with a compacted snow. I guess I'll have to shovel again.  It's quite fun though.  But it is really cold out!!! BRRRRRRR.... ......

Dec 18:

The temp went up a little and the snow on the street turned into a slush mixed with dirt and became brownish-gray.  Then at  night, the temp went down again and became icy.  A tree limb snapped and fell on my sister's new car. WOW, HASTLE!!!  More snow and ice predicted. Sho-shovel nanaman ako?!!!  Ah leche, suma-sakit na ang likod ko !!!  Whew... I miss my houseboy so much!!!

Dec 19:

Wow ang Lamig!!!! The snow plow came by 2X today.  First he covered the streets with "sand", then came back and pushed the snow and ice mixed with the dirty sand on the driveway again. s***, ako NANAMAN  ang mag sho-shovel noon eh!!!!!!!!  Ang hirap pala kung araw-araw mong ginagawa!!!

Dec 20:

Power went off due to the weather and cold. Sinisipon na kaming lahat dito. Used kerosene heater which tipped over. Putaragis, nasunog yung mga kilay at pilik mata ko.  Bwuisit na bansa ito!!!

Dec 21:

More snow predicted. Wind chill -7 degrees!!! Nag li-leak na yung bubong ng utol ko. All the plumbing pipes are frozen. Naku, walang pang katulong!

Ano?!!  Ayoko na!!! Inyo na!! KAYO NALANG DITO. UUWI  NA 'KO SA PILIPINAS! Lecheng bansa ito!!!

 ;D ;D ;D

in 1990 (winter), i saw snow for the first time. i saw a black man , black woman for the first time. and saw 'puti tawo' for the first time.

lol. talk about a cultural experience; more of culture shock considering i came from a rather homogenous society such as the philippines.

a fellow classmate of mine , dan, who also recently immigrated to america that year (his family came from davao; so we both talked in bisaya to each other..lol...since most of the filipino kids in school were tagalogs; hence we couldn't communicate to them in their "funny language") :)

dan and i befriended nigerians and african immigrants in our class. i remember so clearly what dan said to me, regarding our new african friends.
"ngano itom man sila kaayo? di siguro sila mo ligo, no?"

ha ha ha ha ha. oh goodness!

winter 1990.

when i first entered St. Aloysius School, i was introduced to the class as " lorenzo from the philippines ".

during recess, a group of filipino kids came to introduce themselves to me. shocking. they talked, but i could not understand for the life of me-- their 'funny language'. it was only later that i found out that they were tagalogs. lol. i spoke to them back in binisayang bol-anon, "hoy di jud ko kasabot ninjo."

they looked at me and said, "ano sabihin mo? hindi kita intindihan."

lol.

oh goodness.  :P

I like that: Lorenzo from the Philippines

Sounds so historic like: Lorenzo de las Islas Filipinas

;D

lol, oh Gec, indeed. Tho i had a classmate, Earl, a Tagalog, who told me that I was not a 'true Filipino' because I could not speak Tagalog.
Besides, why should I learn their 'funny language' when one is already fluent in Bisaya. I communicate with Tagalogs in English. I communicate with Visayans in Bisaya.

Tagalog, in my view, is so feminine sounding (no offense to the Tagalog speakers out there, just my view). Bisaya is much more nobler/ masculine-sounding language. I will continue to learn all the different dialects of the Visayan Language Family: Cebuano, Hiligaynon, Waray-Waray.

Am a full blooded BISDAK. Bisaya Daku. ;)
