Bohol Sunday Post

Last week two of the Catholic schools in Jagna sent students to compete in the Bohol Association of Catholic School (BACS) in Balilihan. Advanced reports say that they got clobbered in athletics but excelled in the brains department. Some say that this was to be expected. Others were of the opinion that we sent sissies who are only best in takyan and kikays who could not even roll a hoop or kaliring. That of course is not true.

The bigger contingent came from the Central Visayan Institute Foundation, one of the most featured secondary schools in the Philippines. The students there ranges from late twelves or early thirteens to late sixteens or early seventeens. By our standards, they are yet boys and girls. In quest of academic excellence, the boisterous and those who have two or more red marks in their cards are advised to transfer to other schools. Then, those who have a failing grade are not accepted as athletes since training would affect their studies.

This policy weeded out the rowdies and muscle brains, a group from which most athletic materials are found. Despite that, there are still potential athletes left.

They were picked out and trained but their training would not be extensive so as not to interfere with their studies. If they would be pitted against any team that would approximate their academic standards, they would give a good account of themselves. But that is not to be so. Well, one cannot win them all.

There are those who wonder what standards has the BACS adopted in qualifying athletes to their meet. We hope, they did not close their eyes to the practice of some colleges who enroll dedicated and sometimes professional players though their educational background is spotty so they can play in the varsity team. This would run counter to the saying Mens sana in corpore sano.

One of the oldest and most famous scholarships in the world is the Rhodes Scholarship. This will allow those who qualify to study in famous earning institutions in any discipline vital to human development and welfare. The awardees must not only present an excellent academic background but must also prove that he also had an acceptable athletic career in college.

This scholarship grant was funded by Cecil Rhodes, an Englishman who founded an organization, which controlled the supply and sale of diamonds in South Africa.

Aware that if the supply of diamond is not regulated prices must fall because of the law of supply and demand, he compelled all diamonds finds to be sold to their group. Aside from that, he was responsible for the formation of Rhodesia, which was later renamed by nationalistic blacks as Zimbabwe.

Cecil Rhodes never married. When he died, he left his fortune to be administered by a Board as they saw fit. They founded the Rhodes Scholarship according to Rhodes' wishes. We cannot say that the authorities of the CVIF are not aware of the qualifications of a Rhodes scholar. Even though they are not, their players are encouraged to attain athletic as well as academic competence. Winning or losing in the BACS athletics is not so important. What matters is how they played the game.
