Bayanihan Wows Boholano Audience in Jagna
« on: February 05, 2008, 03:25:40 PM »
As expected, the dance repertoire for more than an hour and considered as maiden performance in Bohol of one of the country’s national treasures, the Bayanihan Dance Company, afforded extreme yet quality enjoyment to more than a thousand fans and culture and the arts aficionados coming from the different places in the province on the evening of January 26 at the jam-packed Jagna gymnasium.

Mayor Exuperio Lloren personally welcomed the world class performers during the short pre-show program as he expressed profound gratitude in behalf of the Boholano people and the Local Government Unit of Jagna in particular for extending their goodwill and sharing their most after-sought time and talent in promoting the country’s dance culture.

“We will never forget this most memorable evening with you. Despite your hectic schedule, you still find time to come to our humble town and offer your world-class talent for the realization of our culture and the arts development projects,” Mayor Lloren said.

The Mayor likewise lauded the effort of his older brother and former Bayanihan member (Batch 1973) himself Mr. Antioco Lloren for facilitating the prestigious dance concert as he especially mentioned the major and the broad audience for their support.

Among the most applauded dances performed included the Kagilimut-Malong which is a Muslim dance using the expert manipulation of the malong and the mastery of the hands, postures and subtle movements.

The Sayaw ed Tapew na Bangko or the dance on top of a bench was a more daring variation of the dance with benches placed one on top of another sending the audience to a spectacular moment.

The Vinta showed the agility and skillful balancing dance on top of bamboo held on the shoulder of men with a long cloth symbolizing the water or waves was breathtakingly demonstrated with grace. A vinta is a native boat of the south with colorful sail.

The Singkil which the Bayanihan developed with simple variation in 1958 and has since become a theatrical and stylized spectacle to the point of it becoming the signature piece for the dance company awed the audience so much.

Towards the end of the show, Bayanihan Executive Director Ms. Suzy Benitez introduced each of the young dancers and instrumentalists and to the surprise of the Jagna people, she presented Janice Alborez, a Kaliwat-Jagnaanon of the Rañoa clan of barangay Can-upao, as one of them.

However despite the success of the dance concert, Mr. Antioco Lloren lamented on the unenthusiastic response of some Jagnaanons to the once-in-a-lifetime show of the Bayanihan Dance Group.

“Our people still need to be educated culturally…while most Filipinos abroad would spend hundreds of euros or US dollars just to be able to witness the Bayanihan Dance Company for that matter, here, is a sad reality,” he opined.

Further, because of the Intellectual Property Rights which the Bayanihan Dance Company is INTERNATIONALLY entitled to, many were not able to take full video coverage and were banned to take shots of the various dances. Most of the dances are still due for release as announced before the start of the dance concert.

Consider pleasures as they depart, Not as they come.
