A Commemorative Book about Jagna, Bohol

At long last the authorities are starting to realize the Jagna has a rich cultural heritage after all. When the Jagna Culture and Arts Council, JCAC, decided to put up a commemorative book, the first chapter was about the pre Hispanic past. A writer contended that Jagna was already an organized community with its culture and traditions. Although the ancient folks left no written records or permanent structures except stone hedges, the practice of secondary burial could be found.

Survey of the probable burial grounds by the writers of the commemorative book located some of them. One was in Cantagay and another Canupao point. Both were found in grottos or small caves. Both areas were vandalized. In Cantagay, a coffin was thrown out of the grotto and the bones were scattered. There was an evidence treasure hunting nearby. In Canupao where there was abundance of old bones, none are found now.

There are stories of other gravesites in Jagna. One is in Larapan, another in Odiong. At present JCAC writers are trying to locate a burial ground in Cansanga. Here may be other sites and hopefully, they have not yet been vandalized. The characteristics of burial grounds are they are found in small caves beneath cliffs. Most are almost inaccessible. Coffins for adults and infants may be found. Several skeletons occupy one coffin. Ceramic shards are usually found around the coffins.

Anthropologists say that those graves are evidences of secondary burial. Recent dead are buried in shallow graves then are exhumed after several years then placed in boat shaped coffins in small caves. The practice is almost similar to those to the mountain people of Luzon . They mummify their dead by smoking the cadaver then buried in almost inaccessible places like cliffs.

If several burial grounds are found farther inland, it means that Jagna was already a thriving community before the Spaniards came. There was already a division of labor like farmers and fishermen, craftsmen like carpenters and weavers as well as traders. That means we did not just come down from the trees.

JCAC writers had collected pieces of old bones and coffin splinters in such sites to have them carbon dated to determine their age. All living beings, plant or animal, absorb carbon during their lifetime. The absorption ceases when the creature dies. Along with the common carbon, a carbon isotope called Carbon 14 is also absorbed. Carbon 14 is radioactive, which means it radiates energy and while it radiates, it also deteriorates into another form of carbon.

The half-life of Carbon 14 is 5,730 years, which means a mass of Carbon 14 becomes one half after 5,730 years. Then this mass becomes half in another 5,730 years. The limit of Carbon 14 dating is 50,000 years. A margin of error is established at 300 years. A rough analogy may be made like thus. A kilogram of ice will melt in half if left under room temperature says 32 degrees Centigrade in thirty minutes.

If a kilogram block of ice left in a room 32 degrees warm weighs one half kilogram afterward, this means the block is in the room thirty minutes. If the same block weighs one-fourth kilogram, it mean the block is there for one hour. If the block weighs one-eighth kilogram later, it means it had been there for an hour and thirty minutes and so on.

Now that we are becoming culture conscious, local authorities would perhaps pass laws regulating treasure hunting and prevention of vandalism of burial sites. All artifacts found must be identified and if possible be the property of the town. Stiff penalties must be imposed to prevent violations. In doing so Jagna will preserve her cultural heritage, whatever was left of it.

Dia history sa Jagna....... :)

Jagna appears in documents as early as March 15, 1565 when Miguel Lopez de Legaspi was driven by unfavorable winds towards this coast and because his flagship “San Pedro” underwent repairs along Jagna bay.

The Society of Jesus (Jesuits) started their work in what was known as San Miguel de Hagna as early as 1596. The Recollect historian Licinio Ruiz wrote that the Jesuit priest P. Jose Sanchez founded the parish and town simultaneously on September 29, 1631 with St. Michael Archangel as its patron saint.

The name Jagna was, according to historical records, derived from legendary vernacular exclamation “ni hagna na”. The tale started from the usual occurrence at the mouth of a small river which is already dried up now but whose actual traces of real existence are still visible beyond doubt. At the mouth of the river was a hole or cave-in of considerable depth and size. Such condition of the river led the early inhabitants to call it as “Boho River”. The river used to abound with so much fish called “tigue” in the local dialect. When the school of that particular fish played on the surface of the water, such part seemed to appear like coconut oil boiling in a frying pan. And whenever the people saw the sizzling surface of the water caused by the movement of the fish, they used to remark “ni hagna na”, meaning the oil being cooked is almost done. Therefore, from this common expression of the villagers evolved the present name of the town “JAGNA”.

The first settlers of Jagna descended from the natives of Loboc and Talibon. These settlers wanted to migrate to Mindanao riding on their sailboats called “bilos”. Because of the inclement weather, they were forced to seek shelter in Jagna. However this brief refuge turned into a permanent stay as they found Jagna attractive and an ideal place for establishing a village.

It's rather interesting reading this. There are many theories in where the Filipino people came from, some say that we are part of the Malay waves that came from Java-Borneo and settled what is the Philippine Archipelago, still there are others that claim that we are part of the same Pacific Polynesians that inhabit interior Taiwan. Did we come from the north, the south or a mix of both and some western dna?

Interesting, Way Nada, so you are telling us that there was a large Hindu community in Jagna during pre-hispanic times?

Sir Way Nada,

You bring up a valid point considering the heavy Hindu, Buddhist presence in the Philippines prior to the Spanish arrival. Maharlika (the Philippines) was part of Srivijaya Empire, a Malay political machine that practiced Hinduism and then later Thervada Buddhism. Considering the Philippines was a vassal of Srivijaya, the transfer of religious beliefs is probable.

In fact that is the reason why central and southern Philippines is called "Visayas", it comes from the "VIJAYA/ SRI VIJAYA"

I agree and the transfer of religious beliefs is probable because their religious tradition is with us today blending with the catholic belief.

The word Bisaya comes from Sri Vijaya. This was an empire occupying Indonesia before the Majapahit took over and drove the Vijayan away from Indonesia. Some of them landed in Bohol and their language are a common usage among us Boholanos. For example is the town of Candijay. Where did the word Candijay came from? Since their is no written history about the Vijayan we'll just resort to listening to some legendary stories that Candijay comes from "kang dihay". But in my opinion Candijay comes from Sanskrit. Candi means temple and jaya means victory.

Indeed there is definitely a transference in the cultural milieu: religious, lingual and politics. During the height of pre-hispanic Philippines, there were multiple princely states known as Rajanates, and at the helm were the Rajah. An example was the Rajanate of Maynilad and its ruler was Rajah Lankadula. Another example would be the Rajanate of Sibu, which was ruled by Rajah Humabon.

The word Rajah is the Hindi word for 'king' or 'ruler'. In fact, there is a region, a state, in India that is called 'RAJASTHAN' , which means "the Land of Kings". During the reign of the Mugal Empire of India, the sovereign was called "MAHA RAJAH", which roughly translates as "King of Kings".

There was heavy Indian, Arabic as well as Chinese influence in the Philippines prior to the arrival of the Spaniards and the subsequent Christianization and ultimately Hispanization of the Philippines.
