A German man, despondent over the death of his Filipino wife, killed himself in a southern Philippine province, a police report said on Thursday.

The report said Reiner Herman Paul Korneg, 58, locked himself inside his car and suffocated from the engine's fumes at the garage of their house in Dipolog City, 735 kilometres south of Manila.

Korneg's body was discovered by his wife's nephew who came for a visit on the weekend.

Police said the victim appeared to have connected a hose from the car's muffler to the ventilation window near the driver's seat, causing him to die due to carbon monoxide poisoning.

Korneg's Filipino wife, Betty Bale, died of breast cancer two months ago.

Korneg, a native of Berlin and a structural engineer by profession, stayed in Dipolog to be with his wife. He had a car repair shop and was a part time disc jockey in a local radio station.
