Gollum diagnosed with mental illness

Gollum, the disturbed hobbit-kind creature from the Lord of the Rings trilogy, most probably suffered from schizoid personality disorder, researchers said today.

Fans of the Tolkien novels have long debated the nature of Gollum's mental illness, with discussion on more than 1,300 websites.

Now medical students from University College London have come to their own conclusions about his mental health.

Many have suggested that Gollum suffered schizophrenia, while others say he had a multiple personality disorder because of his other incarnation as Smeagol.

Smeagol was aggressive and spiteful to others, eventually creating Gollum who had an even more violent personality.

A survey of 30 medical students found that 25 diagnosed Gollum with schizophrenia, with three citing a multiple personality disorder.

Two-faced character

The researchers said both of these were possible based on the character's behaviour and the interaction of the two personalities of Smeagol and Gollum at the same time.

But based on their discussions, the team, led by Dr Liz Sampson, concluded that Gollum displayed seven of the nine symptoms of schizoid personality disorder, including solitary habits, nervousness and paranoia.

The researchers, writing in the British Medical Journal, said: "Gollum displays pervasive maladaptive behaviour that has been present since childhood with a persistent disease course.

"His odd interest and spiteful behaviour have led to difficulty in forming friendships and distress to others.

"He fulfils seven of the nine criteria for schizoid personality disorder, and if we must label Gollum's problems we believe that this is the most likely diagnosis." -- http://www.dailymail.co.uk/
