Unusual Feet

                             Village girl Shen XiaoJing was born with unusual large feet.

Her right foot measures 32 centimetres long and 12 centimetres wide. while her left foot is 30 centimetres long and 11 centimetres wide. The big toe of her right foot is as large as a baby’s foot of a baby at 7.5 centimetres long and 4.5 centimetres; her second toe is 9 centimetres long and 3.5 centimetres wide. For 21 years, all her shoes were made by her mother. Shen Xiaojing is now 170 centimetres tall and has reached the age to marry. However, most young men have been frightened away by her giant feet.

AER is an acronym for Apical Ectodermal Ridge:

Limb outgrowth is dependent upon interactions between the AER and the underlying mesoderm.
If the AER is removed, the mesoderm stops dividing.
If a supernumerary AER is grafted adjacent to a developing limb, a supernumerary limb results.
Prospective limb mesoderm grafted under flank ectoderm will promote formation of an AER and a supernumerary limb.
If limb bud mesoderm is removed from an early limb bud, the AER regresses and the mesoderm ceases proliferation.
Therefore, limb outgrowth involves reciprocal interactions between the AER and underlying mesoderm.

The patient had a greater AER presence, leading to an overgrowth of the proximal and distal phalanx of the foot (her toes). Something genetic went wrong where there was an excessive inductionary effect.
