You should use "whom" anytime you could answer the question with "him" .This is easy to remember because both words end with m.

Example: Whom do we need to thank?
              We need to thank him.

Example: Who is on the show next?
He will be on the show.

Can't we use whom if we refer to a woman?

Good question, Haps. The rules says, you will use it when you answer the question with him.

I don't think you can use it with her, it would be redundant.

Well, I'm not a grammar expert. LOL!

Why don't we ask lumine....luminnnnnnnnnnnnnnne

Happy

According to the American Heritage Book of English Usage, "Who is used for a grammatical subject, where a nominative pronoun such as I or he would be appropriate, and whom is used as the object of a verb or preposition."

The Blue Book of Grammar and Punctuation offers this helpful tip: if you can replace a word with "he" or "she," then it is the subject of the sentence and you should use "who." If you can replace the word with "him" or "her," it is the object and you should use "whom." You might need to rephrase the sentence to make this work.

This technique of substituting a personal pronoun for the relative pronoun works nicely whenever you have difficulty deciding whether to use “who” or “whom,” assuming that you have no difficulty using the proper form of personal pronouns.

Even when the word order must be altered slightly, you can use the technique:

Mrs. Dimwit consulted an astrologer whom she met in Seattle. (She met him in Seattle.)

Jones is the man whom  I went fishing with last spring. (I went fishing with him.)

Joyce is the girl who  got the job. (She got the job.)

Whom can we turn to in a time of crisis? (Can we turn to her?)

This one confuses many a native English speaker  ;D

I was taught a similar trick to imagining the sentence with 'him' or 'he'.  You can alternatively use 'them' or 'they', then it works for plurals too.

Mrs. Dimwit consulted an astrologer whom she met in Seattle. (She met them in Seattle.)

Jones is the man whom I went fishing with last spring. (I went fishing with them.)

Joyce is the girl who got the job. (They got the job.)

Whom can we turn to in a time of crisis? (Can we turn to them?)

Happy

Joyce is the girl who got the job. (They got the job.)

Ben, why used they, when Joyce is just one person? Is they, refering to Joyce or others?

cel, ben was citing the use of "they" and "them". to quote, he wrote, "I was taught a similar trick to imagining the sentence with 'him' or 'he'.  You can alternatively use 'them' or 'they', then it works for plurals too.

If this topic confused you then don't worry.  Most of my countrymen don't know the who/whom rule anyway.

grazie7y

No, Ben, it's okay; we are all having fun here!  at least we are still on the same topic. hahahaha you have seen how some threads started and ended in an unrelated topic. But I think everybody's cool here!

maybe it's an obvious trick - but I remember how it works by looking for the last letter m

ie. Them / Him => Whom
and therefore They / He => Who

John

To choose correctly among the forms of who, re-phrase the sentence so you choose between he and him. If you want him, write whom; if you want he, write who.

Who do you think is responsible? (Do you think he is responsible?)
Whom shall we ask to the party? (Shall we ask him to the party?)
Give the box to whomever you please. (Give the box to him.)
Give the box to whoever seems to want it most. (He seems to want it most. [And then the clause "whoever seems to want it most" is the object of the preposition "to."])
Whoever shows up first will win the prize. (He shows up first.)
