Having the chance to meet a famous personality is an experience we can never forget. What more if we could have a memento that we could touch and  take home with us? If you had the opportunity to have something from someone famous, what would it be?

A book owned by Jose P. Rizal. Maybe one of the original prints of El Filibusterismo with his signature in it.

Inig uli nimo sa Pinas dong, go to USP (Univ of Southern Phils) in Cebu...the owners ana nga school are descendants of Jose Rizal. They have a small Rizal museum, their collection is quite remarkable. You'll see some of the most intimate personal things ni Rizal didto...

I'll make USP one of my top destination lists this summer then, 'te. Maybe I can take a picture with Sr. Rizal's family and plaque it in my wall, hahahaha. Now are they his direct decendents? Like children or distant relatives? Because I thought the great man that was Sr. Dr. Jose P. Rizal lost his child in childbirth?

Thanks a bunch

Descendants of one of his sisters.

You'll see a lot of Rizal's letters, some mga love letters niya sa iyang mga chicks...

You'll also see his clothes. Mubo ra man diay si Rizal. Looking at his clothes, he can't be more than 5 feet tall.

But what he lacked in height, he compensated for with his extraordinary intellect. They say he spoke 22 languages fluently, that's just so amazing to me.

Sigbin II

I think he was 5'1" or 5'2".  Basta representative ra pud sa height of the average Filipino at that time.

C2!!!! thank you for the info... ill go there inig maka uli ko.. have you seen it???

potot and skinny bitaw si Rizal pareha ni Nora Aunor...

C2H4

Yes, I've seen it, ms belle. It's a small place, it's more like the family's private collection kang Rizal. I think you'd need to call ahead of time kay murag dili jud na siya open to the public at all times.

I used to love going to museums, ms belle. Kung naa kas Cebu, do check out the museum of the Osmena family, naa duol sa CAP bldg. Also, the museum at Southwestern University is remarkable. It's a showcase of very rare Cebuano artifacts, unya makita jud nimo didto ang history of Cebu. One of SWU's owners, Dra. Alfonso, is an avid collector of Cebuano artifacts, and is quite the historian herself. Everything sa museum, nakuha niya from her archeological digs.

....ah it is so very romantic! I've written so many papers on Rizal and reading about him from western academians praising him and reading the interpreted version of El Filibusterismo and Noli Mi Tangere...it really makes my spine tingle. Its almost crazy because the image I have of the man is like...almost a divine one. To me, i cant help but see him as a christ-like figure, he died for his people--and faithful to God to the very end!! Dios Mio!!

I sometimes get side tracked and forget that he was also but a man...with the same ailments as you and I, the same sins, vices and human needs as well. When you talked about his clothes and letters----my immediate reaction was "Dr. Rizal wore clothes? " hahaha, but you know what i mean, 'te.

Seriously tho---i plan on visiting this museum---it will probably the closest way of me ever getting close to the Great Rizal. The man that I've obsessed and passionately read about through these years....

One of the greatest quotes I adore of his was his from his last work, "Mi Ultima Adios"

Otros te dan sus vidas sin dudas, sin pesar;
El sitio nada importa, ciprés, laurel o lirio,
Cadalso o campo abierto, combate o cruel martirio,

+++

The english translation is:

Farewell, beloved Country, treasured region of the sun,
Pearl of the sea of the Orient, our vanquished Eden!
To you I gladly surrender this melancholy life;
And were it brighter, fresher, gaudier,
Even then I’d give it to you, to you alone would then I give.
In fields of battle, deliriously fighting,
Others give you their lives, without doubt, without regret;
Where there’s cypress, laurel or lily,
On a plank or open field, in combat or cruel martyrdom,
If the home or country asks, it's all the same--it matters not.

Dodong, yes...when you see his things, you'll get a feel of Rizal the man, and not Rizal the hero. I know Mi Ultimo Adios by heart, dong. My great grandmother, during the last years of her life, spoke most often only Spanish, the language of her childhood, unya kanunay ni niya i-recite ang My Last Farewell.  :)

Ms belle, nope, wala na mi Spanish. Latin hinuon, pero nakalimot nako. My mom, when she was in college, naa daw sila Spanish. Just today, naay pasyente nga mexicana nga dili jud intawon makasabot ug english. So I had to tell her how to take her meds in my very limited Spanish, "tomar medisina uno cucharita cuatro veses cada dia para cinco dias"...wahahaha! carabao Spanish jud kaayo!

True jud na Ms belle, if you work in healthcare, and you're bilingual (english & spanish), dako jud kaayo imong advantage.

:)

I once had an encounter with some members and a staff of a visiting children's choir from Mexico who were performing for a children's music  festival in Loboc.  The restaurant we were having our dinner in had run out of Coke and, like me, they were apparently "Coke fiends" too.  Mas barato man kuno ang Coke diri.  They wanted the bottles of Coke I had in hand and kept asking for "una botella de Coke."  I could only rudely answer, "No puede!" hehe ;D
