I noticed that some of you guys were talking about techniques and styles in taking photos using high end or ordinary digital cameras in picture of the day thread.

I started this thread for us to be able to have a venue to share how we can improve our skills in photography. May it be a Pro like capture or just a beginner.

Share your views, ideas and suggestions on how to capture and create good pictures.

the framing however can be improved.

Ever herad about the law of thirds? Photographers also say that a composition, to attin the formal balance may have to be composed (framed) in a way that the entire viewfinder is arbitrarilly divided into three horizontal and three verical lines. Here, your points of interest may be located on the lower horizontal or upper horizontal lines (also horizons in landscapes) while the vertical lines would have the accents?

actually, it's a stolen shot. yeah, rule of the thirds and the golden mean wherein the main subject of an image should be placed at the intersecting points created (roughly) by the lines.

ISO problably was high, the light was good but a bit too bright. I have no problem of the third or fourth, the capture was perfect.

Use lower ISO when lightings are substancial and dont use flash. But again it is difficult to shot candid shots.

That could have been like this... I only modified the brightness, as you can notice the shadow behind his hair compared to the previous with no shadows at all, and you can even distinguish the shape of his face . But again most candid shots needs to be modified if you have a PUTOSHAP! Otherwise thats one hell of a shot.

I learned that most photographers still use their point and shoot gadgets and I do still use my point and shoot camera.

BTW, that is why im gone for sometime because im studying photography...ning associate sa ko sa mga photographer kay i really wanted to learn. Naa jud uban nga di mo share sa ilang talent and i really hate it. O well that s their business...

I´m not a technical freak, so I use a simple Sony with 8 mega pixels, if I want to focus on a face,i-sentro nako sa ilong, kon whole body, sa tiyan. Kon panorama, sa maapas lang sa kong camera.I usually make candid shots. My camera is old but makes wonderful pictures and it is very easy to use.

any suggestions to improve the shot?

My approach would be a tighter crop cause of the eye contact, i would give emphasis on the eyes cause of the joy within it. Tama sad na you should consider right composition but again its subjective not all can be included in rules of thirds. Again photography is also breaking the rules.

My processing approach would be subtle cause I want to retain the sense of candidness within the image and I would also darken the surrounding areas of the image making the viewers draw focus within the eyes and facial expression.

A strong presence can not be cultivated or developed, it is intrinsic in a person. My example to this is Penelope Cruz, Eva Mendez, or Alma Moreno. Your beauty belongs to this. ( Ajaw lanay bot-bot Belle!)

I used a simple Sony Digital camera 8 megapixels, the weather was a bit cloudy. The ocassion was the visit of Fr Fernando Suarez in Bonn last year. I love to take pictures where it is unexpected. This is a Fil-German group in Duesseldorf.

Ever wonder why sometimes when you upload you pic online it sometimes have dull colors or you want to print it in a photo lab and it doesn't look great compared on your PC? Well one reason for this could be that you are using different color spaces.

To show an example, below are the same picture but save in different color spaces.

heheh, dli tawn...and she is so young to be my GF (she's is 18), post post lang ko sa onemodelplace.com and she msg me to do a TFCD for her port. Bali akong gamit is Sb800 with shoot thru umbrella and one source lighting camera left lang na. The good thing about sa Nikon CLS kay built-in na man gud ang triggering system niya. Not sure sa canon pero what I know you have to buy the IR trigger para gamiton nmo ug trigger, tama ba? Naa man ka 580EX dba? Kaya na nmo oi...hehehe

Murag barato ra man ang shoot thru umbrella. The one I use is AUD$12.00, pero daghan siguro mapalit sa agora oi or sa mga shopping centers dha. Heheh, kasuway na gyud ko ug mga DIY lighting setup. Kasuway man gani ko kurtina lang akong gamiton as diffuser.

Hinoon daghan na man ron ningawas ug mga strobes ug mga continuous lighting na gkan china na barato ug nindot.

Heheh, pwede gud suway ka self portrait nmo or imo bana kaha as model para ma-practice ka ug portrait photography...heheh thats what I did. Mao ni mga first shots nako with my family.

I also agree 98.9 percent mostly sa cover magazines are retouched. Kay lahi naman gud atong perception sa beauty. Mao na maka eye catching kanunay ang mga advertisement sa magazine.

Naa jud ko experience kanang mo-adto ko Mcdonalds nya nindot kaayo ilang picture sa burger nag-laway gyud ko tanaw ug gigutom ko kaayo, nya sus tawn gagmatoy kaayo...maka depress na hinoon ko kaon..heheh

I experience na sad anang mga hard core nga kadaghan ba nilang maleta mga herementas sa pangodak!

Placing your light to where...



i put the light behind the plant at about 2 o clock position and this is the effect of the light, more drama...


...than just by placing the light in front of the plant which  also has showed  artistic realization of the subject.

There are a lot of things that a studio can do to get you the shots as you imagined.

There are also a whole lot of equipment you may need.

One thing i would like to put up is a portable dimmer which would be useful when you take kind of nice fotos with the character, the texture and the artistry that looks professional.

One with a barn door would be ideal and a couple of blue gels could enhance the effects.

Placing the light too is crucial, and ms da binsi is right, as her shots prove putting the light at different angles actually enhances the feel of the image.\

Follow-up lang ko gamay. One additional comment is aside from the great lighting, people should also consider composition


Be carefully cropping certain parts of the subject. Like the leaf on the bottom 


In this image I would suggest filling the frame kay murag there's a blank space on upper right portion.

I studied it so many times dear pero that picture alone tells so much stories that for me doesnt needs to be modified...

I still got it in my album kay sigi nako  tan awon. ako man gani unta na i paste sa akong flickr but it was not my capture.

Suggestions: I would not modify it if that was mine.

I always love that picture, its very nostalgic and meaningful.

Dear Jerwin,

Looking at the variations from the original, I reacted differently to each pictures. I din´t expect that it could affect me. At the end I would personally prefer the original. I have had a friend buried and the atmosphere and weather was just the same.
Thank you fo showing us your talent and other possibilities.

I see and thanks for the comments. Yes we have different view points and with the reactions to fellow members I will be putting down and deleting the that I modified images. I believe this images shouldn't be modified in the beginning due to its solemn and meaning.

Lock and Load Mode


Dli akoa lens, just borrowed it from a friend of mine. Well kung naa gyud ka wawart kini na setup nindot ug bokeh.

But I would suggest getting a Nikkor 18-200mm VR, basically cover na nmo most focal lengths and  a Sb-600 would be a starter strobe. Ang D40 is equipped with a commander na pwede nmo ma-gamit with the Sb-600. If you would shoot low light I would suggest  getting a 50mm 1.4G, kay ang 50mm1.4D dli mo fucos sa D40 kay wala man sya motor mechanism sa body.

There are third party lenses that gives you similar results but mas cheaper. There are considerations that affect DOF, one is the lens and the distance of your subject. Google lang about it..

Again don't worry about your hardware focus on your skills una. And keep on shooting kay free man ang pixels...hehehehe
