This topic is about  successful  people  of Corella .

1. The first man to look for lands in Davao was Mr. Catalino  Sayon. When he found a fertile land,  he invited more     
     people from Corella to join with him in search for a greener pasture. They were able to built a new 
     municipality of New Corella in Davao del Norte.

2. The first boxer of Corella was AJ 'Bazooka  Banal who won many bouts and fought at Las Vegas, NEvada, USA.

3. The first man of Corella who was recorded  in National Geographic was Carlito Pizarras, known as tarseir
     man. He was successful of breeding the tarseir.

4. The first man from Canangcaan who   become a mayor of Corella was Hon. Vito  Rapal, teacher and   
     businessman.

5. The first man from Canangcaan who become  a lawyer was Atty Nicolas Sayon, labor Arbiter in Region X1.

6. The first man from Canapnapan who become a US navy was Regoberto Tajantajan.

7. The  mayor who served the longest term in Corella was Atty Hermilandro Tocmo.

8. The municipal councilor who served  the longest term was Fortunato Malanog of Canangcaan.

9. The first man of Cancatac to become a mayor of Corella was Atty. Rolando Ondong Bolando

The young talented, artist and promising boxer, AJ 'Bazooka' Banal won another higher belt in the recently INVASION: Philippines versus the world held in Manila. He is from Corella , Bohol the home of the Philippine tarseir. We are proud of you.

Congrats to AJ! But sad to note that AJ is now a cebuano because he lives in Ermita, Cebu City.  His father migrated to Cebu City for quite a time already and landed a job as DRIVER of one of the garbage trucks of the Cebu City government.  That's why I would like to suggest to my good friend Mayor Vito Rapal, that if we want to call AJ Banal as our very own, he should get back AJ's father.  Mayor Rapal should give job to AJ's father so that the entire family will go back to Corella.  It's very unfortunate to note that in the international boxing arena, AJ Banal is known to be from Cebu City, Philippines instead of Corella, Bohol, Philippines.

It's all right to acclaim AJ Banal , the first boxer of Corella who fought in Las vegas, Nevada USA. He was residing in Corella when he started his boxing career. He is a natural born Pilipino in Tanday Corella. Sad to note that his family is now residing in Cebu. But AJ will still look back the past .

You know at one time, we were watching the game of AJ Banal with friends from Cebu (including PBA's Dondon Ampalayo).  They did not say AJ was from Cebu instead they said he was from Bohol but they cheered for him jud!  They were proud of him as much as we are, true-blooded Boholanos!

SAYON- ANGCO Clan had a reunion at Canangcaan Elementary School Playground, beside their ancestral home last April 29, 2008. Many members of the clan from Davao City and other places in Mindnao attended the whole day activity. It started with Euchraristic Mass by Fr. Paul and Co. with Fr. Marlon J. Lumanas who were members of their clan. It was followed by presentation of Clan, games and talents show by clan. THere was also awarding of the most number of grandchildren, farthest in attendance and highest public official (Public, Private, Business, Priest and Professional ). The overall chairperson was Jose Nicanor  "Dodong"  Tocmo,  former mayor of Corella Bohol.
               
           SAYON-ANGCO Clan started from 5 families:

Profile of a Good Leader

     He was borned on June 30,1916 in Canangcaan, Corella Bohol to the parents Pedro Daray and Margarita Sayon . He was commonly called Engco Eden by the folks. Less had been written about his younger life. He finishded only Grade V1 and always been the head of the class. He had a very good penmanship in slanting
style. He was friendly and fond of teasing  anybody in form of a joke.
     At the age of, 18 he was enlisted in the Phillipinre army and after two years training timely that  the second world war broke out, he was called for active duty in the arm forces of the Philippines.He become a recognized member of the USAFFE. He was always in the front line being a first sergeant.He was a "death marcher" and a prisoner of war.
     After the war, he was discharge from the military and live a simple life, a farmer in his native hometown in Canangcaan. Because of his prowess in leadership, he was always chosen as president in any organization in the barangay like the PTA. In 1960 he was elected as barrio teniente. In 1965 he was again elected as first barangay captain and served without any honorarium until 1981 when resigned due to old age.
I remembered that when there were visitors coming to the barrio, our house was the venue for lunch and we tried to spent the last peso for the best food to be served. He organized benefit dances " bayle", during that time to earn money and make it a revolving fund for the barangay. He always think  of what he can do to the barangay to raise money because there was no ERA during that time.
     Proud to say, he is my father , Ireneo S. Daray, a great leader, a frammer of Canangcaan, a defender of freedom. His life is worthy of emulation.

Nakaadto ba imo father sa America?  He should be there, being a war veteran.  He must be receiving big pension as war veteran, like the late Lucio "Osyong" Clarin!  Dagku kaau to sila pension from the U.S. government. And it showed in their lifestyle also, dagku pod kaau sila og balay.

Ang imo wife is also a BAYRON. Is that the same Bayron in Candijay, Bohol?

My father being a Usaffe did not enjoy so much of pension because he died in 1994. He recieved P1500 monthly during that time. I know personally Osyong Clarin. His wife, Felicetas was my Grade V1 adviser. My wife is descendants of Bayron clan in Candijay, Bohol. His Lolo migrated in Davao in 1940. Pagbalhin nila sa Davao ilang gibaligya ang inherited land mao nga wala na silay uli-uli sa Bohol hangtod namatay and ilang lolo. Matod niya, unsa pa may ulion nga wala na may tandaon didto. Dili  maayo diay nga ibaligya ang mga inherited land. Ang mga Buagas diha sa Poblacion Corella paryente na sa akong Nanay pero layo-layo na.
Lolo na ko. Tulo na akong apo.

Akong gisulat ang akong mga descendants aron makita nila ang mga pangalan sa ilang mga kaliwatan nga tua na sa laing lugar sa Pilipinas.

Sir Felix, naa koy kaila na Bayron sa Davao City.  Married na sya karon and I don't know her married family name.  Her name was Rose Ann Bayron.  Teacher iyang mother sa Ateneo de Davao University.  Do you, by chance, know her?

I am not familiar with Rose Ann  Bayron. Related tingali sa akong asawa basta gikan sa Bohol sila nga mga kaliwat. Naa diay ka sa Davao City nagpuyo?

Naa ko dre sa California, Sir Felix but I graduated college at the University of Mindanao but that's not where i met Rose Ann Bayron.  We were working together in a project in South Cebu.  Thank you, Sir Felix!

In Digos City, I took MA units in education at the University of Mindanao Digos Branch. Sad to note that the main old building was razed by fire last 2006. The new building in quite big, spacious and beautiful.

The oldest parish priest of Corella was Gorgonio Pueblos. He was commonly called padre Onyong. When I had a confession in 1962, he forget that I had finished telling my sin. He knocked the compisalan. He was partially deaf during that time.

Congratulation to AJ Banal! Despite that he lost in the latest fight, we can say that he reached the highest peak of his boxing career. He fought  the best of his ability. It is said that there is no success with out loss. Still he is young  and many more chances and  hopes.

        REMEMBERING CORELLA CENTRAL ELEMENTARY SCHOOL GRADUATES 1960-61

It took 47 years when we left our beloved Alma Mater, the Corella Central Elementary
School on March29, 1961. I felt that it was yesterday. Time flew so swiftly and   many
acheivements and remarkable changes happened to all of us through all the years.

On April 29,2006, there was a call for a class  reunion at Banana Drive Public Market of
Corella but only few attended. Though it was an informal gathering but at   least  we
shared past experiences and old memories and exchanged greeting as well strengthened
our ties among batchmates. This was initiated by Hon. Billy Daquipil  who was  vice mayor
during that time. The following batchmates present were: Isabelo Daquipil, Reynaldo Irig,
Elisio Sayon, Eduardo Jumawan, Esteban Curayag, Primitivo Pizarras, Felix Daray, Lydia Bete,
and Ignacia Calumba

im a frequent passer of the corella-balilihan road going to tagbilaran because it's more diverse going to dao terminal. i didn't know vito rapal personally but i do hear his name several times. but my father does knew him but on to what extent i don't know.
i don't know that there is a water deal involving corella until now that it's being opened up here. i will try to ask my kumpare about this since he is from canangcaan.

These were the leaders of Corella during the Spanish time
in the late 1800's. The following  were from Canangcaan:
Celedonio Sayon, Eusebio Calio. Juan Lagura, Mateo Lumain
Celestino Caliao and Eusebio Darunday because of their sur-
names. I can still remember that my great great grandmother
was Sayon,  fathers bloodline  and my grandmother was
Darunday, mothers  bloodline.

They were called Don  because they were most influential
people in the town during their times.

Corella was created into a municipality in 1885. The first mayor was Don
Lorenzo Tocmo. The first Tiniente of Canangcaan was    Celedonio Sayon
commonly called Capitan Onsot.

The two past mayors of Corella Andro Tocmo and Dodong Tocmo were the
descendants of the first mayor.   Hon.  Vice Mayor Ondong Bolando would 
have been the  descendants of Don Matias Bolando.

The great leaders in the past were now the leaders today. History repeats
itself.

  Tracing back the past, the following were the pioneer clans in Canangcaan, Corella:
  Daray, Comidoy, Sayon, Ado, Malayao, Malanog, Caluba, Darunday, Mantica, Caliao
  Lagura and Tapay.  Most of these clans migrated in Mindanao since the early '40.
  Whenever you can read names bearing with these surnames, you can say  that
  they were descendants of Corella Bohol.

Ang gipili sa mga katauhan mga mahimong unang mayor mao si Catalino  Enong Sayon, ang unang tao nga taga Corella nga nakaabot didto. Siya ang leader sa first migrants. Wala siya modawat kay dili man siya politiko ug tigulang na siya niadtong 1966. Ang unang apointed mayor mao si Hon. Prospero  Amatong, kanhi nahimong governador sa Davao Province. Si Engr. Amatong maoy nag-abre sa dalan paingon sa New Corella tungod sa logging. Siya ang project manager sa logging  in the  early 1960 mao nga nakaabot ang karsada didto sa New Corella. Ang nahimong mayor nga taga Corella mao si Miguel Darunday, taga Poblacion Corella Bohol. Mahimong bise maayor si Yayong Mantica, taga Canangcaan. Daghan pang mga elected opisyals nga mga Bola-non. Sa Poblacion  sa New Corella, 75% of the land were owned by Corellahanon. Sa nahimong nang municipality niadtong 1966, daghang  mga Bisayan tribes  misulod
ug karon nahimong nang usa ka mauswagong lungsod intermiggled with different Pilipino tribes.

bitaw, originally ang corella sakop na sa baclayon sa una. the adoption of the name corella was made at upon the prodding of friar jose maria cañabas who was then the parish priest of baclayon and was also endorsed by friar felix gullen, the first spanish priest. corella was a name of a village in navarra, spain where the patroness of this town is nuestra señora del villar showered her miracles. the creation of this town was due to the untiring efforts of its inhabitants notably pedro lumain, severo laoay, lorenzo darunday, pablo sayon, calixto vale and isidoro ramo. the first municipal captain of corella was isidoro ramo, who was followed by lorenzo tocmo who was also known as tan insoy, then followed by celedonio sayon also known as tan onsot, then followed by eusebio galio also known as tan Eboy, then leocadio mahinay aka tan ayong, then it was macario sinajon aka tan cario and the last was mateo lumain also known as tan teo. under the US administration there were people who were were elected as municipal presidents or mayors. they were pedro togonon, severino clarin who served for 8 yrs., nicanor tocmo who won 2 terms, tomas lumain who was not able to complete his term as he died during his reign who then was succeeded by  lino añong, nicanor tocmo won back office and served it from 1928 to 1932, catalino vale won 3 terms from 1933 till the 2nd world war broke out. he then became the puppet mayor for corella under the japanese rule.
