Dear Mike,

Naa mi organization (worldwide kini) nga gitawag ug BOWACCC, kun Boholano Overseas Workers and Community Credit Cooperative with CDA Registration no. CBU-2817. Usa ako sa mga board members niini.

Our cooperative's objective are mainly to generate funds and extend credit to the members for productive and provident purpose. Thus, creating an avenue for savings while working abroad and to encourage each member to prepare him/herself to be financially prepared prior to homeland reintegration.

Presently we are working as a quasi bank for Boholanos Abroad. In future, we aim to build a bank or an enterprise, solely owned by Boholano OFW members. However, non OFWs are also welcomed.

Dear Mike,

Appreciate if you could kindly edit my original message to change the web site to 3 "C"s as readers may go to the wrong web site which is already discontinued.

Thanking you in advance....

Dear fellow Boholanos,

I would like to invite you to join and support BOWACCC's thrust to establish a Micro-Finance Bank in Bohol to cater the need of the less privileged and to all Boholanos Overseas. You may access ( www.geocities.com/bowacccoop/home.html ) for more info.

Thank you and regards,

Thanks, Mr. Bonite for the invitation.  I will visit your website to gain more idea of the direction of your project.

I once was involved in a project wich was a tripartrite agreement between two Phil. banks and the Cebu Upland Project, another project of the German's GTZ  to initially set up a bank in the municipalities of Alcoy, Boljoon and Oslob.  We were not approved because there were existing rural banks in the area so we set up a People's Development Bank (PDF) but we kind of hide under the skirt of cooperative framework.  Anyway, I don't want you to bore of the details of PDF but I will surely read your by-laws and articles of incorporation in your website.

I have so much respect for people like you have visions of uplifting the lives of people especially the under privileged.  Keep up the good work!  God bless!

Hi Grazie.. here you go. thanks for the compliments. i see.. with your experience and support I would imagine that BOWACCC's vision would take a step forward. need more Boholanos like you for the cause.

padayon!

grazie7y

I started reading the data in your website.  I am not sure if I am just not reading well but just a minor - maybe typo error in Article 8.

I am reliving my past experience with PDF through your BOWACCC.  I will continue to read the by laws.  thanks again.

Yes Grazie.. there are some typo errors there but all the same the motive is pure. just take your time reading and let's enjoin fellow Boholanos to go with our direction towards a pro-active Bohol.

Macky Ferniz

Dear Grazie7y,

Bein a Board Member of BOWACCC and at the same time the Treasurer, I realized that there are endless opportunities and countless benefits cooperativism could contribute to the society and to the economy in general. It is one of the solution to alleviate poverty and what is more noble than that. In fact this is more effective than charity as most of charity is a one time help and ones this help is consumed, the situation goes back to previous. Cooperativism is "Impowerment" to the individual so he can stand on his own.

Sorry, Mr. Bonite.  I didn't mean to be rude.  Ako lang na pansin ang value per capital man gud.  Anyway,  I know your motives are pure.  Dili bya sayon2x mag organize ug ing-ani na coop more so na naa sa ubang dapit ang mga incorporators or cooperators.  You all are doing a good job!  Keep it up!  Yes, magpadayon pa ko basa kay mao lagi ning naa pay i pang tubag sa TB hehehe but I am getting there.

Dear Mr. Macky,

I have no doubt of the benefits of cooperativism because as I said in previous posts or different thread, I once was involved in a similar project that you are doing right now.  It was maybe not as huge a market as your target right now but it entailed lot of work and yes, sometimes tears especially in our case then because the leaders were mostly women and as you may have known we women gain our strength from crying :D.  Anyhow, we got frustrated and all especially if our enthusiasm is not met with the response of the people but I think, if you really believe in your visions, you are almost halfway through your mission. God bless!

In terms of physical strength, men are stronger, but in terms of will, I believe women are stronger. American progress started when women were allowed to vote.

Please see this link of a successful cooperative in Bohol which is run by housewives. http://theboholchronicle.com/cbill.php?issue=172&s1=2272&s2=2280&s3=2287&s4=&s5=2283&s6=649&s7=2284&s9=&s10=

It is the Raffia Waving cooperative in Tubigon & Inabangga. Infact just this July, they have generated a booked sales of P5,040,000, please see this link: http://piabohol.blogspot.com/2007/07/local-english-news-072607.html

Macky,

Question:  Unsaon man namo pagka member na wala man mi diha to attend the pre-membership seminar?  Thanks!

Grazie

Macky Ferniz

Thanks Grazie for your inquiry.

Pre-membership seminar is just a formality. They character of the person is what we value the most. If you happen to be in Bohol, you may take the pre-membership seminar at our H.O. in Calceta St., where the main topic of the seminar is the bylaws.

But, since we are scattered around the world, one may just open the website and read the articles of cooperativism and bylaws. Once you have digested the topics that is considered as taking the seminar.

Moreover, our policy is not simply accepting any member, but we have to look into the character and sincerity of each applicant.

Macky Ferniz

Moreover, I want to add something about the Raffia waving cooperative in Tubigon and Inabangga.

Success won't happen overnight. They started from Php 5,000 capital and for 13 years they nurtured this cooperative until it grew this big. I mean that's a lot of perseverance and dedication.

This is just an example and a source of inspiration, that if these simple housewives did it on limited resources, how much more if we "overseas workers" with vast resources worldwide would pull together.

yes grazie,
at BOWACCC, it is not the bulk of memberships (quantity) but the quality that is manifested in your sincere intention, humaneness to share through the spirit of cooperativeism,  the positive outlook , trust and most not for personal vested interests.

grazie7y

Thanks Macky and Jun for your reply!  I was guessing that's gonna be your answer that the pre-membership seminar is just for formality though I know that's one of the basic requirements by the CDA for a person to become a member but I just would like to make it clear.  Anyway, what is discussed during the pre-membership training which is the basic tenet of cooperativism and how members' participation is invaluable in the success of the coop. I read it in the website already your articles of cooperation and by laws.

Just one or two more questions:  you both said that you are after the quality of membership not the quantity.  How can you look into my character and how can I manifest my intentions?  Is it through the number of shares I subscribe?  I am so interested in being a part of BOWACCC but I may not be able to buy a lot for reasons I need not explain.

Thanks again!  Believe me, we are in the same page...

Macky Ferniz

Thanks Grazie,

There is something I would like to add and it is the difference between a cooperative and a corporation. They may have many things in common, but let me enumerate on the aspects where they greatly differ.

In a corporation, the one who has the biggest share has voice and owns the biggest vote by the board; i.e. in SMC, Soriano owns the biggest share; hence he is the President.

While in a cooperative, we have a one member, one vote system. During the general assembly/election, each member regardless of his share is entitled to a 1 vote. Hence, even if you have Php100,000 worth of shares and I have only Php3,000 (minimum share to be a member), we have equal voting power.

Hence, if you display a good character with genuine intentions, there is a possibility for you to become one of the Board Members during election (if you have many fans). In a cooperative, there is no discrimination on gender, age or religion.

Further, in a corporation, the revenues of the company will be shared only among incorporators.

While in a cooperative, the net profit of each year shall be shared by all members, in a form of dividend, which is in proportion to his/her capital share.

Moreover, if you avail a loan, you will be entitled to what is called a "patronage refund". A patronage refund is a portion of your loan revenues, returned back to you.

To explain further, if you avail a loan from any bank, the revenues from that loan will go to the bank. While in a cooperative a portion of that revenue mo balik ra nimo as patronage refund.

Moreover, all our transactions in a cooperative is "tax free". While if we build a corporation, the BIR is always on the lookout to take a big bite of your revenues.

There are more technical information I would like to share with you in due course.

grazie7y

Thanks too, Macky!  I have both worked with cooperatives since I mentioned earlier I have helped set up a People's Development Fund (PDF), a cooperative which was owned obviously by the people. Actually, a few of the members of PDF were also cooperatives so it was such a beautiful project. I have also worked in corporations.  I am already convinced of the benefits of cooperatives to its members and I think the best essence of cooperativism is that there's no discrimination as you mentioned on gender, age, religion and also on how big your shares are.  When I think about cooperative, the first thing that comes to my mind is the word empowerment.  Empowerment to its members so to improve the quality of life among its members and the community, as a whole.

I observed that in most times, the leaders of the cooperatives are those people who initiated the coops.  Is that a fair statement?

Thanks again!

you are correct Grazie in most cases, it is always the leader who got the opportunities to be on the Board but we are not limiting the board membership to that context...to be in a group is a shared responsibility, every one must empower himself to grow... it is the environment of receptiveness that would motivate a neophyte to be a leader... hence, the pioneering members of the BOD who are leaders must lead by example for others to emulate...

grazie7y

Thanks, Jun!  I will go over again the membership application form.

I think your reservations were based on the past performances of the cooperatives you were in...but it is not fair to be judgmental...out of the same concept...but I guessed you got the message clear... Welcome to BOWACCC.

grazie7y

Hi Jun, I guess I did not communicate well.  I did not have reservations at all and I wasn't being judgemental.  I was surprised why you said that.  I was interested with BOWACCC and its concept and I even started to campaign for it to my relatives.

Hi Grazie,
am sorry didn't get what you want to convey considering that with yourm first hand experiences on cooperatives..., i got different impression on the other way around based on inquisitiveness... but I believe you understand fully the whole concept... am glad you're IN...

grazie7y

No problem, Jun.  I was being "inquisitive" because I wanted to make sure my understanding of my previous experience with coops is still in the same page with the current system .  That's also why I really took time to read what's in your articles of cooperation and by laws.  Anyways, as I said, no prob.

thanks Makcy & Jun for taking time to explain all about BOWACCC. i wish Grazie will finally join us in our crusade to empower the less privileged. atong ipakita sa tibuok kalibutan that the notion of 'ija-ija aho-aho' among Boholanos is worng. that we Boholanos are very cooperative among each other. on the other, thru cooperative we could pool our resources together. bisan gamay ra ato money pero kun ato ni tapu tapuon dako ug daghan kana which could somehow compete teh big capitalist. all we have to do is trust each other and be positive towards where we are going.

Welcome to BOWACCC Grazie and i hope you will bring more of your relatives to join our cause.

grazie7y

Thanks, Dong!  You, Jun and Macky are so true and again, I admire all your dedication to Bohol and to OFs and OFWs!  In what you said about gamay na money atong tapu-tapuon, tan awa bitaw na sa simbahan, sinsilyo man na gipang hulog kasagaran sa collection basket and yet at the of the mass pag ihap na nila, ubay2x naman dayon!  So nice kaayo tong imong gi ingon!  I need to reiterate what you said kay I am so interested and yet gakaguol ko sa kakulangan sa akong pundo so what you said is really inspiring.  Before the end of November, I will be officially in.  Naa lang kompromiso karon sa hospitalization bills.  Thanks a lot!  Keep up the good job!
