The Armed Forces on Thursday said it was validating reports that Chinese jet fighters had entered the country’s airspace around the disputed Spratly chain near Palawan but conceded it had no capability to detect and intercept the alleged intrusions.

AFP Chief Lt. Gen. Eduardo Oban said the military was checking the intelligence reports, but admitted that the AFP does not have the capability to detect or monitor such intrusions, and even if it does, it has no power to intercept them anyway.

“In terms of capability, No. 1, we don’t actually have the detection and monitoring capability, we don’t have radars to check if indeed they intruded into our airspace,” he said.

“No. 2, if indeed we have that capability, we need interdiction. We also have no capability to interdict or to intercept, which is why the first option is to lodge a diplomatic protest,” said Oban, who spoke at a Communication and News Exchange Forum sponsored by the Philippine Information Agency.

The AFP chief said he hoped that in time, “we can go in this direction, towards territorial defense.”

“We need to come up with an effective detection and monitoring system most particularly in the Palawan area where we have vast maritime resources to protect,” Oban said.

A military official, who spoke on condition of anonymity for lack of authority to speak on the matter, said the unidentified aircraft was observed at an altitude of about 5,000 feet.

The aircraft was spotted by the Filipino pilots of two OV-10 light attack and observation planes which were on a routine patrol mission near the Reed Bank, part of the Kalayaan group in the Spratly chain claimed by the Philippines.

it is so sad. how can we detect the chinese jet fighters when the philippines doesn't have any air superiority fighters? we already mothballed our old and rusty 1960's F-5 fighters. now, we only have propeller trainers that constitutes the bulk of the philippine air force.

if china wanted to attack philippines, a nation of 100 million people, it could do so easily because we don't even have a 3rd generation air force. we would lose air superiority to the chinese in such a situation. luoy pood ang pilipinas...

even poorer countries such as cambodia, burma, bangladesh have a better air force than the philippines...

this is quite saddening. back in the 1960s, the Philippine air force was the envy of asia. we had a fleet of F-8 Fantoms and a bulk of then-state of the art F-5 Tiger air superiority fighters. the philippines even detected a russian long range bomber and chased it out of our air space after it was targetted and followed by a squadron of the philippine air force.

the philippine government is very wise. they are pouring media articles and news reports on supposed chinese violation. the truth of the matter is the fact that the chinese have already been intruding philippine air space, and naval territory for years.

the increased threat induces the united states to increase its military financial aid packages to the philippines per annum. most of which, unfortunately go to the pockets of corrupt generals.

luoy kaayo ang pilipinas. we are still using 1940's style frigate ships as our flagship of the navy. its a floating tin can.

realistically speaking, china will not attack philippines. it has too much special interests in the region. besides, there is a large chinese population in the philippines already. the chinese/ tsinoys already control the philippine economy.

why should china take over philippines? the richest men in the philippines are chinese/ tsinoys. eg) tan, gukongwei, sy, lim, etc..

The Philippine Military has been saying it is undergoing modernization for years since the late 90s. Yet in over 10 years we have not acquired any superiority fighters. All we have to show are used and run down / refitted old American Broncos and propeller air craft that constitutes the bulk of the air force. There is a saying that the Philippine Air Force is called the Air Farce.

We have nothing, no fighters or any recon picket craft that can even go against / toe to toe against China's air superiority fighters.

We cannot pacify and crush the Abu Sayaff and require American assistance to crush a bunch of separatist rebels; now we are trying to engage the military might of the People's Republic of China? One of China's provinces is bigger than Philippines. How can a shrimp go against a whale?
