Bishops push anti-condom drive

A day before the 15th Congress opens and President Aquino delivers his state-of-the-nation address, the Roman Catholic hierarchy renewed its push for natural family planning, saying that artificial birth control violates Catholic teachings.

In a pastoral letter, the Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines urged Mr. Aquino to continue the moral legacy of his mother, the late President Corazon Aquino by rejecting policies that promote the widespread use of condoms, pills and other contraceptives.

The Church favors only the use of natural family planningâ€"which advocates abstinence during a woman’s fertile period.

The prelates released the statement, signed by Bishop Nereo Odchimar of Surigao del Sur reiterating their stand against abortion and insisting on the use of natural family planning.Odchimar is chairman of the CBCP’s commission on health care.

The bishops rejected the proposed law on reproductive health and population and development that was re-filed by Rep. Edcel Lagman as House Bill 96.

The bishops said the bill is similar with House bill 5053 filed in the last Congress which seeks to control the country’s growing population and prevent the spread of sexually-transmitted diseases.

“With the utmost concern and urgency we express our strong objection to the fundamental aspects of House Bill 96. The basis of our moral objection is once again the central religious truth of the divine origin and divine image of the human person, of one’s being and life,” said the CBCP.

“Science has proven that some contraceptives render the mother’s womb inhospitable, thereby causing abortion,” it added.

The Church leaders reminded Mr. Aquino that the constitutional protection of the unborn child from the first instant of conception was a legacy of his mother.

“It is a legacy given to us some twenty years ago during the presidency of President Corazon C. Aquino,” said the CBCP.

The prelates instead supported the pending “Act Providing for the Safety Protection of the Unborn Child and for Other Purposes” or HB 13 filed by Rep. Roilo Golez.

kita pa ni, ordinaryong katawhan.  this does not include yet those government officials whose interests are really their own.  that's an old song.  but so are we. 

it does not mean that we could not change.  we have all the potential.  we're getting there in terms of personal discipline.  it's reassuring that we now know how to fall in line (in atm banks, for public rides, at grocery stores... time was when all these were a free-for-all; sinikhanay to the max).  we have hope as a people.       

meantime, we can train our kids to learn the ropes of giving priority to one's needs and not one's wants.

as for the bishops' role in our country's population control program, please, they're just doing their duty as dictated by the church.  perhaps we can also do ours.

Ang size sa sperm kay mas gamay pa sa mga bangag sa condoms. Therefore, condoms are not a 100% sure assurance of non-conception after the act. Besides, pugngan ani ang possible fertilization sa egg therefore preventing life mao nga dili gusto ani ang simbahan. There is still no substitute for abstinence.

a condom per se has no moral dimension.  how it is used by humans is another matter.  (i understand it's also used with prostitutes?)   

i haven't fully explored the church's reasons for its opposition against condoms in particular, but its stand against all forms of artificial contraception in general is easy to determine just by the word 'artificial' itself.  i'll take the stand of the church any time because it serves best when it serves as both our moral and spiritual compass. 

the church is not against population control; it is against artificial contraception.   that's a whale of a difference.

now, what's wrong with abstinence?
