Fr. Skelton's closet continues to be unhinged

Riding on the wave of accusations that the Catholic Church hierarchy all the way to Rome has been complicit in sweeping under the carpet the clergy's sexual offenses, the American media continues to hound Fr. Skelton who has a conviction of sexual misconduct in the US.

More snapshots of priests accused of abuse

By The Associated Press (AP) â€" 2 hours ago

JOSEPH SKELTON

Skelton was studying for the priesthood in Michigan in 1988 when he was convicted of sexual misconduct with a 15-year-old boy and dismissed from his seminary.

He went to the Philippines, where he was ordained a priest in 2001 in the diocese of Tagbilaran in Bohol province. Today, at 48, he is parochial vicar of St. Vincent Ferrer parish in the town of Calape, according to the diocese directory. Reached on his cell phone, Skelton declined to comment.

The bishop who ordained Skelton said he wouldn't have made him a priest if he had known about the criminal conviction. But he added: "The priest is trying to live well. If he has really changed, the heart of the church is compassionate."

The archdiocese of Detroit, after learning Skelton had been ordained, sent a letter about his conviction to then-Bishop Tumulak in early 2003. Tumulak said he doesn't remember if he received the letter. In any case, he added, it would have been too late.

Informed of the case, current Bishop Leonardo Medroso said he would investigate. But he added: "He was convicted, and that means to say he has served already the conviction. So what obstacle can there be if he has already served his punishment or penalty?"

If Bohol's bishops would do something about Skelton's case, it would be to their shame and embarrassment. So they chose to be silent.
For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son (Jesus Christ), that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him. Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only Son of God. - John 3:16-18

The first time I came across Fr. Skelton was through this youtube clip, while I was searching for live Christian music in Bohol. Since they rendered this difficult duet piece unrehearsed, I was really amazed. This was a few weeks before the news of his past conviction in the US broke out. You can just imagine how younger minds could even be more easily impressed.

JellyBean

Enough is enough of bringing up someones past of twenty years ago.

I am speaking as someone who knows him and was able to meet up with father Skeleton who is now living in Calipe. Him and I had a discussion about the things being passed in the internet about him recently.

He said what happened was twenty plus some years ago and he has asked forgiveness and gone on to make a better life for himself. He is not happy about his past and knows that people still want to prosecute him until now but he is going on strong here in Bohol as a Catholic Father.

In fact many Boholano's passing us by in the BQ Mall yesterday as we spoke were greeting him with the kindest of respect.

How would you want something haunting from your past that you may have done being constantly brought up always.

NO ONE IS DAMNED PERFECT ARE THEY? ASK YOURSELVES THAT?

Besides.... I know many things done bad by Filipino's happen on a daily basis but are kept in a hidden places as well as if they do not want to alarm or admit to the public that bad things do happen here.

We term this as white washing. priest do it often, as they want that this person to get better and not be prosecuted later if he tried to be a better person and example to the community.

At present we have known child molesters living in Bohol from America. How did they get here? How did they even qualify for a passport to be here?

At first I did not want to believe it about father Skeleton but yesterday he told me it was something that happened a long time ago.

I felt greatly choked up in asking him directly if what is in the internet is true but as a good Christian I wanted to respect him and ask him what is really going on? The best advice is to ask direct the one who is being spoken about.

Example...I have asked direct to our administrator about things being told to me from friends about him and I wanted to see if what I had heard was true and it it made him furious at me when I had asked for the truth and he was the only one who I brought it up with after hearing things about him? People are always out there to blah blah and talk others down. (until now I still have saved his text messages.) What hurts is I have always been a great person to him. how could he be mad at me for what? For wanting the truth? So it can work both ways in my case it was back fired on and what I do not quit get is why did it take him almost 7 months to respond angrily when it was just him who I had asked? So we take chances in getting the truth from the right persons.

The difference in asking father Skeleton he admits it, and not hiding things from someone who is a friend. Neither did he get angry in me seeking the truth. What I asked our administrator was not a lie either. but it made him mad when I had heard it from two other persons who also know him why was he not mad at them also for telling me his secrets? I am not being mean in what I am saying I am just saying how it happened.

So we take a risk at getting the truth. I would rather take a risk in getting the truth then being a part of any talks that are not good about someone I know and care about.

Why do not the rest of you go up to father Skeleton as a Christian move in God's eyes and ask him yourself what is the truth. How would you feel after you get the answer? At least it is not denial from him.

Let him go on with his life.

You would think people are more concerned with believing things that are are a lie or bad about others, I know the story behind it. I know those who will be punished by God for trying to lie and hurt others. I have had to be be patient in just letting it go and take it as a part of the culture in how good persons are really not so appreciated.

Leave Father Skeleton alone about his past.

Worry about yourselves and things that involve you personally.

Give good credit where good credit is due stop focusing on negative always.

no wonder the world is the way it is....

I met him last December 2007, it was the Birhen sa Guadalupe fiesta in Booy. I was told by Fr Glen Alipoyo that he is one of the most devoted Marian priest. In his homily he was honoring Mother Mary and Our Lady of Guadalupe who is in pregnant fom in her Tilma.

He is colored not really a black American.  I was so curious how he came to the country especially in Bohol. My query was not answered.

If he was really guilty then and had served his crime, doesn´t he deserve to start all over again? Why did he came to Bohol? Does he really want to serve the Lord as a priest? Who are we to judge him and hinder his vocation or calling?

Pressy, please don´t get mad and try to understand that this person is not an ordinary guy. He has a moral and spiritual  responsibility to his flock. Parents are trusting him and hopefully he is really true to his faith and vocation.

my five cents folks,

I remember a dark movie that became very controversial a few years back. It profiled one sexual predator who was a typical tender, loving father but led a double life preying on children as old as his own. The point is, pedophiles don't walk around flashing a shirt print, "I am after your children." They are ordinary people, sometimes with extraordinary charms and skills--white-collar executives, preachers, singers, actors, etc.

Beware, there are more predator priests on the prowl in the Philippines...

3 ‘fallen’ priests fled to Philippines

AN investigation spanning 21 countries across six continents found that 30 priests accused of sexual abuse were transferred or moved abroad, with three of them ending up in the Philippines, the Associated Press reported Thursday.

Some of the priests escaped police investigations. Many had access to children in another country, and some abused again.

A priest who admitted to abuse in Los Angeles, Santiago Tamayo, went to the Philippines, where US church officials mailed him checks and advised him not to reveal their source.

A priest in Canada was convicted of sexual abuse and then moved to France, where he was convicted of abuse again in 2005. Another priest was moved back and forth between Ireland and England, despite being diagnosed as a pederast, a man who commits sodomy with boys.

‘‘The pattern is, if a priest gets into trouble and it’s close to becoming a scandal or if the law might get involved, they send them to the missions abroad,” said Richard Sipe, a former Benedictine monk and critic of what he says is a practice of international transfers of accused and admitted priest child abusers. “Anything to avoid a scandal.”

Joseph Skelton was a 26-year-old student at St. John Provincial Seminary in Detroit, Michigan, in 1988 when he was convicted of sexual misconduct with a 15-year-old boy. He was given three years’ probation and dismissed from his seminary.

Two decades later, he lives in the Philippines, where he was ordained a priest and now serves as parochial vicar of the St. Vincent Ferrer parish in the remote town of Calape, Bohol, according to the diocese directory. He is also a popular gospel singer.

Reached on his cell phone, Skelton declined comment.

He finished his seminary studies in Manila and was ordained in 2001 in the diocese of Tagbilaran.

The bishop who ordained Skelton said he would not have made him a priest if he had known about the criminal conviction.

“I ordained him because, while there was some talk about his effeminate ways, there was no case against him,” Bishop Leopoldo Tumulak said.

Tumulak, who has since stepped down, said it would be up to his successor to reopen the case.

“The priest is trying to live well,”Tumulak said. “If he has really changed, the heart of the church is compassionateâ€"although in America, Europe, they have different ways of looking at it. Not the church, but the government, the people. In the Philippines, it’s a little bit different.’’

The archdiocese of Detroit, after learning Skelton had been ordained, sent a letter about his conviction to the Tagbilaran diocese in early 2003. Tumulak, the former bishop, said he didn’t remember if he received the letter, and in any case, it would have been too late.

Informed of the case, current Bishop Leonard Medroso said he would investigate. But he added: “The case has been judged already. He was convicted and that means he has served already the conviction. So what obstacle can there be if he has already served his punishment or penalty?”

Tamayo, who was accused of abusing Rita Milla in Los Angeles, was urged to stay in the Philippines, court documents show.

Milla maintained that she was molested by Tamayo at a church in Carson, California, when she was 16. After she turned 18, she said, she had sexual intercourse with Tamayo and he introduced her to six other priests who also abused her.

After she was impregnated in 1982 by another priest at a Los Angeles-area church, Milla said, Tamayo suggested she get an abortion, then devised a plan to send her to the Philippines to have the child.

Milla returned to California after giving birth to her daughter, Jacqueline. She sued the archdiocese in 1984 and won a $500,000 settlement.

Tamayo later went to the Philippines and apologized for having sex with Milla years before he died in 1999.

In 2004, Milla’s lawyer released documents showing the church mailed him checks. AP

For along time ngana bitaw ang simbahan, mahilig og tago2x (secrecy) ug baylo2x (reassignments/reshuffling). But since the scandal of the early 2000s "zero tolerance" na ang ilang approach to priests' abuses (Google "Dallas Charter Sex Abuse") which is good news. Karon ang "purgation" (hehehe) is sweeping all over Europe. Philippines should follow suit.

But still beware... the so-called "predators" are not only within the ranks of the clergy... but in all walks of life and in many families amongst us. Paghikot jud kapunay ug "lata" aron kung naay manghilabot, mag tingog-tingog, bwahahaha...  ;D ;D

Between the 1850s and the beginning of the Second World War male chastity devices were developed for the purpose of preventing masturbation which the Victorian’s believed was a cause of insanity.   It is at this point where we can see a distinct difference between male and female chastity belts/devices.

The Victorian view of the female chastity belt was to protect the wearer from rape, and was therefore considered as a method of security. However, male chastity belts and devices were developed to prevent "self abuse", “self pollution”, "nocturnal emissions" and "insanity, imbecility and feeblemindedness" which were considered to be the natural fate of any young man with lax moral attitudes!

I don't know Fr. Skelton personally. I just saw him perform since he's one of the members of the Singing Priests of Tagbilaran. In my own opinion, it's better to give him a second chance. We haven't heard his side yet. Surely, he has his own struggles, too. Who knows, he had been a victim, himself? We should not condemn him. Instead, we'll pray for him. Condemn the sin, not the sinner.

No Hof'I am not mad at you as we are all entitled to our own opinions in here and I respect that of others except for the picking on persons in here...LOL!

I mentioned earlier that I was able to talk to him on Friday the article came out in the newspaper on Sunday just two days after when I had discussed these things with him.

I am surprised these press releases are saying that he had hung up the phone, and had refused comment? Do we know if that is really what happened?

I have called his cell phone a few times and he takes the tim to talk about what it is that may be troubling someones mind at that time.
I do not see him as the person being described there in the write ups.

That AP write up was same as the news write up that was printed in the Sunday Post last Sunday April 18th. It was written possibly by a Filipino who is having a link with Associated Press (AP) sort of similar to what you call Reuters here.

Why did this person not contact him in person versus over the phone instead? I did not have a problem meeting him at BQ and talking with him direct.

He did not have a problem talking to me about what had taken place in his past, in fact he seemed rather ashamed about it. He told me it was true and he it was in his past that he has served his time for the crime and he is definitely not happy about it.

If your are the same as I am you would hit direct questions to the person with the alleged problem and ask questions straight to get the right answers from the horses mouth.

Especially if your the one to post up news regarding such information as this is a mans past life we are talking about.

Fr. Skeleton has served his time and as Bishop Medroso said in the write up I would have to take the side of the Bishop on this one. I really have a lot of respect for Bishop Medroso here. He is a very educated person in my eyes.

Let him be alone in his second chance at life, and let him continue to be a corrected going straight man now in the same waythat he has been in some time now.

Hi Pads,

For keeping a detached and balanced perspective of what's happening within the Catholic Church, you have all the more won my respect. The highest homily an evangelist can deliver and the greatest praise he can sing is how he lives. I am blessed by your music, and all the more blessed by your down-to-earth camaraderie with us, your cyber-parishioners.

I've met some priests and pastors who have voluntarily confessed their past sinfulness and offer their present lives as testimony of how Christ has changed them. Regretfully, Fr. Skelton had to wait for this media barrage to come out in the open about his past. A forced confession has doubtful sincerity. Openness about one's past, especially for those who have dedicated themselves to the Gospel, is also submitting oneself to personal accountability about one's renewed life.

St. Paul in his epistles makes it a habit to open up about his depraved past as Saul, the persecutor of Christians, to drive his point of the need for man's salvation through Jesus Christ. Paul also proclaimed that we actually stand equal before God as sinners, "for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God." (Romans 3:23)

Christ himself said that he did not come for the good men, but for the bad: "It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick. I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners."

I guess the media should stop hounding Fr. Skelton for interviews, but instead do their homework silently among those he has worked with or the youth he has surrounded himself with since he was ordained.

Needless to say, Christian faith is all about second chances. If this man is found out to have really straightened his ways, praise God! If not, he better face the music, not sing it!

Well written and well said, Tito Ben. Accountability and transparency is a must in any situation, even in most sacred of positions in human society. Forgiveness and second chances are one of the basis of Christian Faith and in the Christian Way of Life. If Skelton is truly repentant of his past sins, to God be Glory and Praise. For He is, indeed, a merciful and forgiving God. If not, then it would be best to prevent such horrific situations from occurring again.

It is hypocritical for some to debase Roman Catholic Ecclesiasy for the 1.7% of pedophiliac cases committed by clergy, when the same acts are prolific in Protestant Churches as high as 10%.

This is not a Catholic problem, but as what Father Roel tells us, a problem within the psyche of some individuals, those who have disturbing sexual fetish disorders. And should be dealt appropriately without attacking the Church itself.

~~

1 Timoth 1:12-17
"I thank him who has given me strength, Christ Jesus our Lord, because he judged me faithful, appointing me to his service, though formerly I was a blasphemer, persecutor, and insolent opponent. But I received mercy because I had acted ignorantly in unbelief,  and the grace of our Lord overflowed for me with the faith and love that are in Christ Jesus. The saying is trustworthy and deserving of full acceptance, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners, of whom I am the foremost. But I received mercy for this reason, that in me, as the foremost, Jesus Christ might display his perfect patience as an example to those who were to believe in him for eternal life. To the King of ages, immortal, invisible, the only God, be honor and glory forever and ever. Amen.
