An earthquake measuring 5.8 on the Richter scale hit New Zealand's Kermadec Islands in the south Pacific on Thursday morning, causing no casualties or damages.

The U.S. Geological Survey said the quake occurred at 8:38 a.m. local time (3:38 a.m in Manila). It was centered at 55 km south of Kermadec Islands' main Raoul Island, and was at a depth of 35 km.

The island, located northeast of New Zealand, is barely inhabited.
