Salamat pod. I got a lot also from your postings. Nia kong daghang klasi sa isda but you had lot not in my list. I am comparing some of your fruits and trees words for possible inclusion in my lists, if I don't have some of them. Actually, I am collecting as many words as I can. I am organizing a Binisaya-English dictionary for almost a year now. So far, I have collected more the 22k words, phrases and idioms. Probably, by January, I will be ready with the manuscript. I am posting some of the collections for sharing, feedback, corrections, comments, if there are any.

Hi tarsier, taga tigbao,

I am surprised we are in the same unprofitable enterprise of compiling a Visayan-English dictionary. Ako naa pa lang ko sa 130  pages (A-4, single-space) kay pahunung-hunong tungod kay kalingawan ra man. Daghan kaayo ko nakuha input diri sa TB, and I am also willing to share my compilation as soon as it is in readable format.

Taga Tigbao, bilib ko nimo, bisag baby face, lawom ang paghigugma nimo sa atong natawhang pinulungan. Naa ra man diay ka sa Manila, next year, hapit na ta masilingan kay diha ko ma-base sa BF Paranaque. Imbitahan ta unya ka ug maka-settle na ko, aron hisgutan nato ang dictionary. My work is mainly translation (mostly Japanese to English, and vice-versa; and Japanese, English to Tagalog, Cebuano, Hiligaynon, and vice versa). A few months ago, I was busy translating TV footages taken in Bohol, Iloilo and Puerto Galera from the local dialects to Japanese. That's the reason why I have been compiling my own dictionary. Pero ron, pahuway sa ko sa dialects kay akong trabaho ron computer-related documents (English-Japanese, Japanese-English), which will continue until next year when I'll be home for good in Manila. We could come up with a jointly-authored dictionary, together with HB, Glacier, Koddi, Raquel ug katong uban pa nga daghan kaayo input diri.

benelynne,

I saw that Binisaya is not growing. It is shrinking by keep borrowing from English and other languages. The dictionaries available in bookstores are old and there are so many new words being used verbally which are not documented and captured. Whereas, there are a lot of Tagalog dictionaries. I feel bad to see the bookstores bookshelves are full of Tagalog dictionaries and there is practically none for Binisaya. There is an urgent need to upgrade, update or enhance the vocabularies and capture them into a better version of existing dictionaries. We should not allow this language to die or be buried by other languages. Next year, the DECS is going implement the directive to use native language as medium of instructions from prep until grade three. I wonder how our teachers will do it when there are no available materials, like dictionaries or Bisayan teaching books. Coming up with new dictionaries might be of help. Pursuing this project will be my legacy and contribution, if only to preserve our culture, language and help the young learn better their lessons using their native tongue. go luck also to your project. hoping too to be engaging in joint projects related to Binisaya language. thanks.

Hi Tarsier,

Abi nako'g unya pa ka mutubag, kay nocturnal man daw ka. Seriously, I share the same concern as you, Tigbao and the rest. A language will certainly fade away by disuse or attrition, especially since TV has been a very effective vehicle of encroachment of Tagalog-based Filipino not only into Visayan, which is actually the majority Filipino tongue, but also other minor dialects in our country.

I myself was alarmed at how depleted my stock vocabulary of Cebuano was, when I first received a translation job of a TV documentary shot in Bohol a few years ago. Nangutana ko sa akong mga Cebuano friends, pero daghan pud sinultian sa interior parts sa Bohol nga endemic ra gyud sa ato. Busa sa dictionary nga akong gisugdan, gusto nako iapil ang vernacular vernaculars (or sub-dialects sa Cebuano). By the way, I also speak Ilonggo (Hiligaynon) but since it is literally my mother tongue (my mother is Ilongga), it seems like a more natural native tongue to me, at least as far as the spoken aspect is concerned. Diri lang gani ko sa TB nakarekober ug nakapraktis ug ayo sa Cebuano. Dako kaayong tabang ni nga forum.

Pasalamat ko sa Makagagahum nga ang akong trabaho translation, because I just really love languages. Next year, I will be back for good in the Philippines. While continuing to receive translation jobs from Japan, I will also be based in a startup Foreign Language School in BF Paranaque, where one of the languages I will be offering is Japanese. Wala pa'y gatudlo ug Cebuano, pero kung makatigum ko'g Korean missionaries para mutuon ug Cebuano, maayo pud tingali i-offer. Daghan kaayo Koreans sa Cebu ug sa Bohol, kasagara turista.

Asa diay ka ron, Tars? Naa ba ka sa sud sa Pilipinas? Maayo unta pud ug magkita-kita ta nila Taga Tigbao aron compare notes for the love of our mother tongue. Who knows we can publish that much-needed Visayan-English dictionary. Impressed baya ko sa imong collection. Kinahanglan lang nato i-standardize ang entry formats, perhaps following Mirriam-Webster or other well-respected dictionaries.

Bay Ben, Tigs, ug Tars,

Padayon mo sa inyong proyekto. Dili man nako linya ning paggama og diksyunaryo, pero motikdol-tikdol lang kog suggestions every now and then. I'm a generalist who is fortunate (unfortunate?) enough to be able to stay that way, but I'm genuinely interested in the preservation and propagation of our native tongue. Sorry kay na-Iningles, he he.

As a point of departure, two books bear scrutiny: An English-Cebuano Visayan Dictionary, by Rodolfo Cabonce, S.J. (Mandaluyong City: National Book Store, 1983), and A Dictionary of Cebuano Visayan, by John U. Wolff, Ph.D. ( Ithaca, N.Y.: Southeast Asia Program, Cornell University, 1972.) Kapin sa libo ang pahina sa either book.

Kining kang Fr. Cabonce morag bali ni kay English to Cebuano man ni. Mapalit ning libroha sa any NBS outlet. Morag nadato na ani and NBS kay hapit man kada tuig naay reprint. Ang kang Wolff dugay nang out of stock. Naay kopya ani sa Cebuano Studies Center sa University of San Carlos.

Sa akong tan-aw, ang gibuhat ni Fr. Cabonce simple kaayo: nagkuha siyag existing English dictionary unya gipangitaan niyag Cebuano equivalents. Daghang sipyat ning iyang libro, pero ang iyang virtue naa sa richness in synonyms.

Ang kang Wolff was done methodically (the book was his doctoral dissertation). Nag-hire siyag researchers who collected words, which he then proceeded to define after considering various submissions from his researchers. He even conducted experiments about pronunciation, etc. Usa sa nakaapan sa trabaho ni Wolff kay daghang naapil nga short-lived words and meanings nga karon after almost 40 years dili na nato masabtan. Unya dihay daghang suok sa Cebuano-speaking world nga wala maabti sa research.

Actually, naay daghang attempts karon at compiling a Cebuano dictionary. In fact there are several websites containing Cebuano word lists (e.g., www.binisaya.com), though these are mostly incomplete. Tinuod, it's high time nga naay definitive Cebuano dictionary. Anyway, it would perhaps be more advisable to first review existing literature and just fill in the gaps, rather than reinvent the wheel.

Best regards,
Hubs

Benelynne,

Dili man god kapanapian ug kasaligan sa panginabuhi.

Wala pod si Cabonce litrang “j”, nga diri sa Bohol daghan man og “j” ang among kapulongan. Di mi makasulti og tarong kong walay “j”.

Salamat,

Tars,

Raquelproud boholana

Nindot unta pud ug naay magsulat ug children story book nga pulong binisaya tanan. Nagkabuong buong ko ug pangita ani wala koy nakit an puro ra tagalog.

Raquel,

Mao lagi. Maayo gyud unta kong may mga binisaya nga libro for kids.

Glacier,

Available man sa internet ang ka John Wolff nga diksyonaryo, Vol. I and II. Salamat.

Bambi,

There is an English-Visaya and Visaya-English dictionary authored by Ben Garcia sold at the National Bookstore. Also, the book of Cabonce (English-Visaya) is available at the same store. I believe you can order them via internet since the National Bookstore operates also like eBay, just in case you are overseas.

Thanks,

Salamat sa tanan,

Tars,

Take note ang similarity sa tanang words nga nahasulat sa taas mao ang letrang "J."

Kay ang inistoryahang Binol-anon ra ang mogamit ug J instead of Y. Sama sa PAJONG kintahay nga sa Sinugbuanon, PAYONG man. But take note nga dili lamang kay taga Bojol (Bohol) ang naggamit ug Binol-anon nga inistoryaha.

My understanding of "hiyus" is to relieve. It can also mean "deflate" like deflating a tire. The comfort room is a place to relieve ourselves of physical discomfort. Mao nga I coined this word "lawak pahiyusan." thanks

Bay Tars,

Salamat sa pagpatin-aw. Usahay man god naay unintended comic effect and atong coinage. In the case of "hiyus", my own experience with our language tells me that "shrink" or "deflate" is the meaning of the word that first comes to mind. In fact, "hiyus" to mean "relieve" is rather quaint to me. More precisely, I have to admit it's a new one on me. Thus I mentioned "lawak pahuwasan", "huwas" being--to my mind--closer to "relieve" than "hiyus" is.

Best regards,

Unsa man jud klaro nga Pangan sa Atong Pinulungan?

Hubag Bohol,

Okay raman ang “pahuwas”.  It is also about release of pressure. Pero sa akong tan-aw, it is more applicable to emotional rather than physical pressure like “pahuwas sa kasuko” or “pahuwas kadiyot human sa kaon” instead of pahuway. Pahuway is to rest from work. Kihanglang ma-modernize gamay atong terminology bahin ani. Uwaw man kong tua ta sa ICM unya mangotana og “asa man inyong kalibangan o kasilyas.” Sa mga pobre, common ang terms na kasilyas, kalibangan o ihi-an. Sa mga middle-class, CR or rest room ang gigamit nila, pero these are not Bisayan terms. Aron ma disente og gamay, duggangan na lang nato og term nga “lawak.” Lawak pahuwasan o lawak pahiyusan, medyo okay ra.

Thanks for the feedback.

You mean, even if there is no such distinction as the language is used now by the present and older generation, we ought to teach said distinction to the younger generation? That we should, by force of instruction, create a distinction where none exists, all for the noble purpose of "improving" our language?

Hubag Bohol,

The Bisayan language today has been eroded because of lack of maintenance. As new words in other language comes, we just borrow them instead of creating the equivalent.

I believe there is no need to distinguish the language of the old and new generation. We just restore and enhance what we used to have and improve it. The trend today is those kids of OFWs and the well-off want their kids to be English-speaking as early as they can. This is one form of killing and forgetting slowly our own language. I guess they should master first their native tongue and take other languages later. They will learn other languages better if they are good in their own native which should be used in teaching other languages. As we notice today, teachers use Tagalog or English to teach English. It's too cumbersome for them.

Ang akong nahibaw-an, walay distinction sa kahulogan sa mga pulong "wait" ug "ngabil". Kon moingon tag ngabil, we refer to EITHER the upper or the lower lip. The same with "wait". Now, you're suggesting that "wait" should refer to the upper lip, and "ngabil" to the lower lip.  You say nga "bakikaw na para sa mga present and older generation" pero "mag integrate na sa atong pinulongan through the younger generation."

It might look neat and convenient, but honestly, don't you think it's a gratuitous "enhancement" of the language?

Hubag Bohol,

The fact that there is ngabil and wa-it only means they have distinct meanings. This is not my creation, it's from my research. In English, there is upper lip and lower lip. It would help if we can find more meaningful description or significance of both words.

The integration of new words is a matter of practice and wider acceptance. Some people create their own and the words that are frequently used becomes permanent. If we study the various words in our language there are many which are really difficult to justify. What are most justifiable should have been those closely related or sounds close to its intended meaning.

Since the older generation are already accustomed to their language, they are less open to new words or vocabularies. Whereas, the youth would be easier to educate if given the proper training and materials.

Thanks,

Tarz

Hubag Bohol,

I went back to my source, and this is what I found out:

ang "ngabil" di-ay "outer part of the lip"
ang "wa-it" is "inner part of the lip"

Sorry gyod and thanks for your feedback.

Salamat, Bay Tars. Yes, this distinction does make linguistic sense, though I've noted native speakers, from ignorance or carelessness or both, using both words interchangeably.  Then again there is the matter of regional variations. I remember hearing someone in Cebu describing a colleague pejoratively as "itom og wait"--it stands to reason that he was describing the outer, and not the inner, part of the lips. And yet the speaker, if I recall correctly, was a native Cebuano speaker and a man of letters to boot.  He could, of course, have been speaking figuratively, but for sure he was literate enough to be certain about the physical basis of his metaphors.

Personally, I'm not worried about--I don't sense--the specter of demise of our native tongue. It will prevail, despite borrowings and related ills that haunt it now--which include our obvious lack of facility in using it to express complex notions. Languages grow (or die) in ways that, sadly, are not susceptible to the charms of good intentions. It is said that 65% of  the general vocabulary and 95% of the "difficult" words of English--the most influential language in the world today--is derived from Latin, which is a dead language. Who knows, maybe 500 years from now the most important language of the world will be Cebuano-Visayan, 65% of whose vocabulary is derived from English, a dead language. Cheers! ;D
