14 dead in American Samoa from quake, tsunami

APIA â€" (UPDATE) At least 14 people were reported killed in American Samoa following the powerful earthquake and tsunami which hit the area early Tuesday, radio KSBS-FM reported.

Another five people were feared dead in neighbouring Samoa.

The earthquake, with a revised magnitude of 8.0 struck at 6.48 am (1748 GMT), the USGS said, generating a tsunami that smashed into the two South Pacific island states.

He who gives and takes away speaks. We can either fear or trust.

New York Times reports that more people could be dead:

A National Weather Service official told The Associated Press that at least 14 people were dead in American Samoa, a United States territory that falls about halfway between Hawaii and New Zealand, and officials in the island nation of Samoa told Reuters that as many as 100 people died there, with 20 confirmed dead.
