The Department of Health (DOH) again raised alarm over the potential resurgence of dengue cases as the rainy season starts to set in.

The Regional Epidemiology and Surveillance Unit (RESU) 7 has recorded a 10% increase of dengue cases since January to July this year compared to the same period last year in the entire Central Visayas.

Although reported cases here in Bohol have dropped, the RESU 7 is urging local government units to intensify information campaign on dengue emphasizing the importance of eliminating breeding places of mosquitoes.

An advisory of RESU 7 also recommended the mobilization of the community to actively participate in environmental sanitation activities such as clean up drives.

Last year, Tagbilaran City ranked second to Cebu City in the number of deaths and dengue admittances in hospitals. From January to July last year, there were 245 hospital admissions in the city due to dengue with 2 deaths.

The towns of Dauis and Jagna also ranked in the top ten of dengue afflicted areas last year with 73 and 67 hospital admissions respectively which was recorded from January to July.

This year however, Tagbilaran, Dauis and Jagna have so far recorded a much lower incidence of dengue.

In the entire Region VII, a total of 2,500 dengue cases were admitted to different RESU 7 sentinel hospitals since January with 74 deaths, according to the DOH dengue monitoring.
